Political turbulence has erupted within the Haryana Congress following controversial remarks associated with late leader Sajjan Kumar, who was convicted in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The controversy centers on Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda, who faces intense backlash from within his own party ranks. Seeking immediate action, former Haryana Assembly Speaker and senior party leader Kuldeep Sharma has addressed a letter to Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, requesting strict disciplinary measures against Hooda. Meanwhile, attempting to defuse the growing unrest, Deepender Hooda released a public clarification and expressed sincere regret to the Sikh community.
Kuldeep Sharma Demands Removal From CWC
Former Haryana Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Sharma took a stern position in his communication to the party high command. In his letter to Mallikarjun Kharge, Sharma urged the immediate removal of Deepender Singh Hooda from the Congress Working Committee (CWC). He stated that alleged statements glorifying Sajjan Kumar or portraying him as a role model have caused profound distress and resentment among Sikhs across the country.
Sharma highlighted that the Sikh community had firmly supported the Congress party, particularly after the farmers' agitation. He warned that irresponsible statements risk alienating the community while handing political ammunition to opposition parties. According to Sharma, stripping Hooda of his CWC position is a necessary step to rebuild trust with the Sikh community and safeguard the party's credibility.
Deepender Hooda Issues Clarification and Expresses Regret
As political pressure mounted, Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda took to X to present his side of the story. He asserted that his statements were being misrepresented over the past two days, alleging that an English word he never uttered was deliberately inserted into his remarks. Hooda maintained that he had no intention of causing harm or hurting anyone's sentiments.
Emphasizing his deep connection with the Sikh community, Hooda remarked, "If the sentiments of any brother have been hurt, I am your brother, I express regret." He added that the Sikh community has always been like family to him and hurting their sentiments was beyond his imagination.
Historical Connections and Legacy Cited
To emphasize his long-standing ties with the Sikh community, Deepender Hooda referenced his family's historical legacy. He recalled the 1908 'Pagri Sambhal Jatta' movement, noting that his great-grandfather, Chaudhari Matu Ram, was imprisoned in Kala Pani alongside Sardar Ajit Singh, the uncle of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
Hooda also drew attention to his involvement during the recent farmers' protest. He recalled being among the first to stand alongside Sikh farmers during their agitations. Reaffirming his respect, Hooda stated that his intentions were never to cause pain to anyone.
