Amid an ongoing strike by municipal sanitation workers, volatile confrontations broke out between law enforcement and protesters across multiple cities in Haryana during the early hours of Sunday. In Charkhi Dadri, Bahadurgarh, and Yamunanagar, authorities attempting to clear accumulated garbage found themselves locked in a direct standoff with striking employees. In various spots, workers physically blocked heavy machinery to prevent garbage collection, prompting police to take strict action and detain numerous participants.
Early Morning Police Crackdown in Charkhi Dadri
In Charkhi Dadri, police detained over a dozen municipal council sanitation workers at around 4:00 AM on Sunday. As news of the detentions spread, fellow workers, union leaders, and representatives from various social organizations quickly gathered at the scene. The crowd raised vehement slogans against the police action and demanded the immediate release of those detained. Heavy police contingents have been deployed in the area as the administration closely monitors the situation.
Workers Claim Peaceful Protests Met With Sudden Detentions
The striking employees maintained that they were conducting a thoroughly peaceful agitation to press for their long-standing demands. They alleged that police launched a sudden crackdown and took them into custody without justification. Following the arrests, supporters from various labor unions and community groups rushed to the locations to back the detained workers.
Midnight Confrontations and Commotion in Bahadurgarh
A tense dispute also erupted between police and sanitation staff late into the night in Bahadurgarh. Authorities had planned to lift garbage from the city under police protection, but the striking workers stiffly opposed the move. Employees positioned themselves directly in front of JCB machines and police officers, refusing to allow any waste removal. Consequently, police detained the protesters and transported them to a police station, where the workers continued shouting slogans and protesting inside.
Garbage Accumulates Across Streets and Intersections
The prolonged strike has severely crippled urban sanitation infrastructure across the affected cities. Heaps of garbage now litter streets, narrow lanes, and major public intersections, causing immense inconvenience to ordinary citizens. A stubborn stalemate persists between the state government and the agitating workers, with neither side showing any sign of softening its stance, directly impacting civic cleanliness and daily life.
Workers Block Heavy Machinery in Yamunanagar
In Yamunanagar too, an intense standoff occurred between administrative forces and sanitation personnel during the strike. Officials attempted to clear municipal waste under police escort, but sanitation workers strongly resisted the effort. Protesters stood right in front of clearing machinery to halt operations, leading to shoving matches between police and workers alongside vociferous demonstrations on-site.
Sanitation Services Disrupted and Protests Threaten to Escalate
Civic cleanliness remains severely compromised across these Haryana towns as the administration explores alternative methods for waste clearance, which the striking employees continue to block. The recent police interventions have only deepened the conflict. For now, the administration maintains a close vigil over Charkhi Dadri, Bahadurgarh, and Yamunanagar, while fears mount that the agitation could intensify significantly in the coming days if the deadlock between the government and the workforce remains unresolved.
