In a major boost to regional connectivity across the Delhi-NCR area, the Haryana government has sanctioned the construction of a new four-lane bypass connecting Palwal and Sohna. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini gave official approval for the modernization and widening of a 24-kilometer stretch on National Highway 919 (NH-919) during a high-level meeting in Chandigarh. The project aims to eliminate major bottlenecks and facilitate smoother travel across southern Haryana.
Streamlining Daily Travel Between Palwal and Sohna
The existing 24-kilometer section of NH-919 between Palwal and Sohna currently operates as a narrow two-lane corridor. Thousands of commuters rely on this route every day to travel toward corporate hubs and industrial centers in Gurugram. Due to the high volume of traffic crammed onto the narrow two-lane stretch, commuters regularly face prolonged gridlock, particularly during peak morning and evening hours. The situation is further aggravated by a high density of heavy commercial vehicles. Frequent overtaking on this narrow highway has also led to heightened safety hazards and recurring road accidents. Local residents and motorist associations had repeatedly pressed the state government to upgrade the corridor.
Part of a Rs 9,700 Crore Infrastructure Plan
The widening of the NH-919 segment forms an integral part of a broader road infrastructure masterplan valued at approximately Rs 9,700 crore across Haryana. Under this statewide scheme, the administration is funding the development of various bypasses and ring roads around major towns to divert heavy transit traffic away from congested urban centers. Beyond easing traffic flow, the Palwal-Sohna bypass is expected to serve as an economic catalyst, encouraging new industrial developments, commercial establishments, and employment opportunities across the Palwal district.
Land Acquisition and Groundwork Initiated
The Public Works Department (PWD) of Haryana has launched preliminary administrative procedures to advance the project toward construction. To ensure a smooth land acquisition process, the department has begun freezing property registrations for land falling along the proposed bypass alignment. This measure prevents speculative land sales before formal acquisition begins. According to PWD officials, actual road construction work will commence immediately once the land acquisition phase and procedural approvals are finalized.
