Chia seeds are frequently celebrated as a powerhouse of essential nutrients, often consumed as a superfood to aid weight loss, improve digestion, and boost immunity. However, despite their widespread popularity, these seeds are not universally compatible with everyone's body chemistry. Renowned gastroenterologist Dr Shubham Vatsya shared a video on social media explaining that certain health conditions require strict avoidance of this ingredient. Understanding who should steer clear of these seeds is crucial for preventing adverse health effects.
Individuals with Low Blood Pressure
Chia seeds contain abundant levels of omega-3 fatty acids and potassium, both of which naturally work to lower blood pressure. For individuals who already suffer from low blood pressure, consuming these seeds can push readings down even further. This drop can trigger symptoms such as severe weakness, dizziness, lethargy, and fainting spells. Women dealing with low blood pressure should be particularly cautious and avoid adding these seeds to their diet.
People Suffering from Digestive and Gut Disorders
These seeds pack a massive punch of soluble fibre. For individuals who frequently struggle with abdominal gas, bloating, stomach cramps, or irritable bowel syndrome, this heavy fibre content places excessive strain on the digestive tract. When a sensitive gut tries to process such high amounts of fibre, it can significantly worsen stomach pain and acidity levels.
Those Taking Blood-Thinning Medications
Anyone currently taking medications that thin the blood, such as aspirin, must steer clear of chia seeds. The omega-3 present in the seeds naturally thins the blood as well. Combining pharmaceutical blood thinners with the regular consumption of chia seeds amplifies the risk of excessive bleeding in the event of an injury.
Kidney Disease and Kidney Stone Patients
Chia seeds are generally considered unsafe for people diagnosed with kidney issues. These seeds contain elevated concentrations of potassium, phosphorus, and oxalate. When kidneys are weakened, they struggle to filter these minerals effectively, which places additional stress on the organ and significantly raises the probability of developing kidney stones.
Individuals Who Do Not Drink Enough Water
Chia seeds possess a remarkable ability to absorb 10 to 12 times their weight in water. Consuming them dry without soaking or failing to drink an adequate amount of water afterwards can cause the seeds to expand inside the esophagus or intestines, creating a blockage. This obstruction can lead to difficulty swallowing food, severe acidity, or constipation.
