While a regular seasonal fever is typically accompanied by a cold, cough, and runny nose, scrub typhus behaves differently. It is transmitted through the bite of infected larval mites, commonly known as red mites. At the site of the bite, a characteristic dark, scab-like mark forms. Because the bite is painless, most people do not notice it initially. It takes about 10 to 15 days after the bite for the primary symptoms to manifest, which include a sudden high-grade fever and intense body aches.

These disease-carrying mites thrive in dense vegetation, grass, and bushes, making the infection far more prevalent in rural areas where people frequently interact with agricultural fields or overgrown lawns. Dr. Sumant Kumar Gupta advises that anyone showing symptoms of scrub typhus should immediately consult a qualified medical professional to begin proper treatment without delay.
Treatment Duration and Severe Complications
If diagnosed in a timely manner, scrub typhus is highly treatable. The standard treatment protocol involves a strict 14-day medical course. However, any delay or negligence in starting this therapy can trigger catastrophic health issues. Aside from severe lung infections, patients can develop pneumonia and brain fever. These secondary conditions are extremely critical and can quickly turn fatal if the infection spreads unchecked. Therefore, prompt diagnosis and immediate initiation of the therapy remain vital for survival.
