Adding water to milk is considered the most common form of adulteration. For a basic initial check, you can try a simple method at home. Place a drop of milk on a clean and smooth sloped surface. On the other hand, if it flows down very rapidly without leaving a mark, it raises the suspicion of added water. A laboratory test is essential for definitive verification.
Hearing about the presence of detergent in milk might come as a shock. To test for this, take a small amount of milk in a clean glass, add an almost equal amount of water to it, and shake it gently. If a large amount of foam is produced and persists for a long time, it may point toward detergent adulteration. However, a final conclusion cannot be drawn solely by looking at the foam, as normal milk can also produce some foam when shaken vigorously.
Sometimes, starch is suspected to be mixed into milk to make it appear thicker. Iodine is used to check for this kind of adulteration. Add a few drops of iodine to a small quantity of milk. If the foam, cream, and texture of the milk look different from usual while heating, you need to pay attention. In fresh milk, the formation of a layer of cream on top upon boiling is normal. Conversely, if the milk curdles suddenly, emits a strange odor, or shows abnormal changes in texture, set it aside and get it tested.
