South Indian actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu has been making headlines recently regarding her pregnancy journey. During an interaction with her fans on social media, she shared that her weight has increased by approximately eleven kilograms. However, the actress emphasized that her primary focus right now is not on gaining or losing weight, but rather on maintaining good health for herself and her baby.
Understanding Normal Weight Gain During Pregnancy
While gaining weight during pregnancy is quite common, excessive weight gain can potentially pose health risks for both the mother and the child. Therefore, understanding the right weight parameters is essential. According to a report by the National Health Service, the weight of most pregnant women increases by about ten to twelve and a half kilograms throughout the entire gestation period. Generally, a major portion of this weight gain occurs after the twentieth week of pregnancy. This extra weight is not solely due to the baby, as several other internal bodily changes are also responsible for it.
What Contributes to Increased Pregnancy Weight?
When a baby is born, their weight alone can range from three to three point six kilograms. In addition to the baby, the increased weight comprises several other factors, such as the enlargement of breasts, the expansion of the uterus, the development of the placenta, amniotic fluid, an increase in blood and fluid volume within the body, and the storage of fat by the body in preparation for future breastfeeding.
Weight Gain During the First Trimester
According to the Mayo Clinic, a significant increase in weight is typically not required during the first thirteen weeks, which constitutes the first trimester of pregnancy. Gaining about half a kilogram to one point eight kilograms during this phase is considered normal. If a mother experiences severe morning sickness or frequent vomiting, the amount of weight gained may be even less.
Why Weight Gain Matters in the Second and Third Trimesters
From the fourteenth week of pregnancy until delivery, the baby experiences rapid development. During this stage, women with a healthy pre-pregnancy weight are generally advised to gain approximately half a kilogram every week. Incorporating about three hundred extra calories into the daily diet is usually sufficient for this purpose. These calories can be sourced from wholesome foods such as fresh fruits, milk, whole grains, protein, and healthy fats.
Is an Eleven-Kilo Weight Gain Normal?
Medical experts state that if the total weight gained during pregnancy stays within the range of ten to twelve and a half kilograms, it is regarded as normal. Nonetheless, every woman's physiological condition is unique. Consequently, if any concerns arise regarding weight changes during pregnancy, consulting a healthcare professional remains the best course of action.
