Addressing the Science, Technology, and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC-2026) in New Delhi on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi outlined a transformative vision for India's technological future. He emphasized that the nation must shift from being a mere consumer of foreign innovations to a global leader that creates, shapes, and deploys cutting-edge solutions for domestic and international challenges. The Prime Minister stated that 21st-century India is moving forward with renewed self-confidence and modern thinking.
Shifting from Tech Adoption to Global Leadership
During his address, the Prime Minister contrasted past practices with India's current trajectory. He pointed out that in previous decades, breakthrough technologies took years to reach India after being launched abroad. During that period, domestic sectors either adopted those systems directly or made minor adjustments to suit local needs.
"Earlier, whenever a new technology was developed anywhere in the world, it reached India years later, but today 21st-century India is creating technology with renewed confidence."
Prime Minister Modi highlighted that modern India operates with a proactive stance. The nation's primary objective is now to design and direct future-ready technologies that address the ongoing and upcoming requirements of both India and the wider world.
Balancing Artificial Intelligence with Human Intellect
Turning to the rapid expansion of AI, the Prime Minister acknowledged its capability to automate routine, repetitive tasks and significantly boost overall productivity. However, he cautioned against over-reliance that could potentially compromise independent human reasoning.
He underscored that technology must be engineered to augment and elevate human thinking, critical analysis, and original idea generation. Rather than replacing human cognition, AI systems should serve as tools that enhance intellectual capabilities and creative problem-solving.
Tackling Emerging Cyber Security Threats
Highlighting the digital risks accompanying advanced AI systems, Prime Minister Modi warned against rising cybersecurity vulnerabilities. He noted that AI-driven cyber threats pose direct challenges to national financial networks and security frameworks.
To safeguard critical national infrastructure, he urged developers and researchers to build advanced, AI-powered security counter-measures. Developing resilient protective systems will ensure that emerging technologies remain focused on serving humanity and bolstering national stability.
Building on India's Rich Scientific Legacy
Grounding his vision in history, the Prime Minister remarked that India has maintained an enduring tradition of scientific inquiry and discovery. He cited landmark historical achievements such as the discovery of zero, the establishment of the numerical system, and pioneering advancements in astronomy.
He called upon modern scientists, engineers, and innovators to draw inspiration from this rich scientific heritage. Combining past knowledge with modern research capabilities will enable the country to set new benchmarks in global technological advancement.
