Adding chia seeds to your diet is only half the job, eating them the right way matters just as much. Packed with high fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, protein and antioxidants, chia seeds have earned their spot on the superfood list, and their popularity has grown fast in recent years. Yet many people end up eating them the wrong way, turning a health booster into something that causes more harm than good. California based gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi explained on his YouTube channel exactly when, how and how much chia seeds should be eaten.
Why soaking matters
According to Dr. Saurabh Sethi, chia seeds should never be eaten dry. Dry seeds are harder for the body to digest and can trigger bloating. To avoid this, always soak chia seeds before eating them. The best approach is soaking them in water overnight. If that slips your mind, a twenty minute soak right before eating also works. Once soaked, the seeds break down easily and the body absorbs their full benefit.
Chia drink or chia yogurt, which works better
Chia yogurt turns out to be more beneficial than a plain chia drink. Mixing soaked chia seeds into curd gives the body fiber along with probiotics from the yogurt, and those probiotics help good bacteria multiply in the gut, improving both digestion and overall gut health. Even when making chia yogurt, the seeds still need to be soaked first. Plain chia water, seeds soaked in ordinary water, is also considered a healthy option.
The best time of day to eat them
Dr. Saurabh Sethi recommends eating chia seeds in the morning. Fiber works more effectively at that hour, helping clear out the digestive system. Morning consumption also gives the body hydration that lasts through the day, leaving it feeling more energetic.
Good for gut health and the whole body
Chia seeds are not just good for the gut, they benefit overall health too, Dr. Saurabh Sethi says. The omega-3 fatty acids in them help keep the brain and liver healthy. They also contain minerals like magnesium and calcium, which support strong, healthy bones.
How much is safe to eat in a day
Despite their benefits, portion size matters. Eating too many chia seeds can do more harm than good, which is why Dr. Saurabh Sethi advises against consuming more than one tablespoon a day. Going beyond that limit can lead to digestive trouble, so it is better to keep the daily amount modest and balanced.
