A disturbing incident has come to light from a postgraduate college in Solan, Himachal Pradesh, where a first-year student visiting the library to get her library card made was allegedly subjected to mistreatment and derogatory remarks. The episode has raised serious concerns regarding student dignity and the conduct of staff within educational institutions. The affected student has submitted a written complaint to the college administration, prompting authorities to issue a show-cause notice to the staff member involved, although the allegations are yet to be independently verified.
The Incident at the Library
The complainant, Sonam Palmo, recounted the sequence of events that unfolded when she went to the library. She explained that she was having a casual conversation with a friend while waiting to get her library card processed. According to her statement, the staff member on duty, Mis Sanjana, initially threatened to slap her and later used highly offensive language when the student went inside to complete the card-making procedure.
Allegations of Derogatory Remarks
In her formal complaint, the student alleged that the librarian labeled her as 'mannerless' and 'characterless'. Furthermore, she claimed that derogatory remarks were made targeting her tribe during the confrontation. Sonam stated that she had never interacted with the librarian prior to this incident and was deeply distressed by the hostile reaction to a routine, normal conversation.
College Administration Response
Principal Dr. Shivani Sharma addressed the situation, stating that the altercation arose due to a misunderstanding during the distribution of library cards. She confirmed that upon receiving the written complaint from the student, a show-cause notice and a formal warning were immediately issued to the librarian. According to the principal, the librarian denied the allegations while citing heavy work pressure as a contributing factor. The administration also noted that the librarian subsequently apologized to the student.
