Severe weather conditions across Himachal Pradesh have directly impacted the UNESCO world heritage Kalka-Shimla toy train corridor. Torrential downpours in the Solan district washed away the foundational earth beneath the railway tracks, leaving a section of the rail line hanging precariously in the air. Responding to the immediate danger, railway authorities completely cancelled ten toy trains scheduled to operate along this route on Sunday, leaving numerous weekend travelers deeply disappointed.
Track Suspension Near Koti and Gumman Stations
According to railway officials, the damage occurred near bridge number 57 situated between the Koti and Gumman stations. Continuous heavy rainfall triggered severe soil erosion beneath the track, causing the heavy iron rails to lose their base and dangle in mid-air. Recognizing the severe safety hazard, authorities had already preemptively halted train operations across this vulnerable stretch late Saturday night.

Shimla railway station superintendent Sanjay Gever confirmed that a total of 10 services operating between Kalka and Shimla have been suspended. Train operations will resume only after complete track repairs and rigorous safety inspections are successfully carried out. This historic 96-kilometer route features 102 tunnels and roughly 800 bridges, though repeated landslides and heavy monsoon weather have frequently disrupted its operations.
Widespread Disruption Across Himachal Pradesh
Beyond the railway disruption, heavy rain and adverse weather have paralyzed daily life across the entire state. Data from the state emergency operation center indicates that as of Sunday morning, severe landslides and continuous downpours have forced the closure of 64 roads throughout the region for vehicular traffic.
District-Wise Impact on Roads and Infrastructure
Mandi district alone accounts for 24 closed roads, followed by 16 in Kullu, 7 each in Kangra and Sirmaur. Furthermore, traffic remains completely blocked on 4 roads in Una, 3 in Shimla, 2 in Chamba, and 1 in Lahaul-Spiti. In addition to transport blockades, basic infrastructure has suffered significantly, with 225 electricity transformers damaged and 9 water supply schemes severely disrupted.

The meteorological center in Shimla has issued a heavy rainfall alert for several parts of the state effective from August 31 to September 3. Over the past 24 hours, rainfall measurements recorded included 38.5 millimeters in Dhaulakuan, 30 millimeters in Ghagas, and 23.8 millimeters in Palampur. Since the onset of the monsoon on June 30, rain-related accidents and disasters across Himachal Pradesh have claimed 103 lives while inflicting a total financial loss of 1,184 crore rupees on the state.
