Himachal Pradesh mountaineer Vishal Thakur has successfully scaled the technically challenging Nun Peak, located in the Zanskar Range of the Himalayas. Standing at an elevation of 23,409 feet (7,135 meters) above sea level, the peak was conquered by Thakur and his three team members in an impressive span of just four days. The expedition team included a female mountaineer alongside three male members, navigating extreme terrain and harsh weather conditions to complete the ascent without incident.

The high-altitude expedition officially commenced from Tangol village, located in the Kargil district. The four-member team set out on their climb toward Nun Peak on August 26, 2026. The team comprised Vishal Thakur, Rahul, Nikita Thakur, and Rakesh Singh Negi. Demonstrating high physical endurance and tactical coordination, the climbers reached the summit along the designated technical route. After successfully summiting, the entire group descended safely, returning to Tangol village on August 30, 2026, marking the formal end of the journey.

Nun Peak is the highest summit in the renowned Nun-Kun massif within the Zanskar Range. The massif also includes Mount Kun, which stands as its sister peak at an altitude of 7,077 meters. Historical records indicate that the first successful ascent of the Nun-Kun massif was accomplished in 1953 by a Swiss expedition team. Since that initial landmark climb, the region has been recognized globally as one of the most prestigious and challenging technical climbing destinations in the Indian Himalayas.
Climbing Nun Peak requires advanced mountaineering capabilities due to its high technical classification. Above the 7,000-meter threshold, climbers face severely reduced oxygen levels, extreme sub-zero winds, unpredictable weather windows, and vertical ice slopes. Vishal Thakur hails originally from the Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh and is currently based in Chandigarh. Having started his journey in basic high-altitude trekking, Thakur eventually transitioned into full-time professional mountaineering and expedition instruction.
Thakur received his formal mountaineering qualifications from the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in Uttarkashi. Nun Peak adds to an extensive list of achievements for Thakur. Last year, he led a team that scaled Manirang Peak in the Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh in record time. His prior successful expeditions also include Black Peak in Uttarakhand, Friendship Peak near Manali, and Yunam Peak.
