A fresh controversy has flared up in Himachal Pradesh over administrative efforts to finance the internationally renowned Shri Renuka Ji fair in Sirmaur district. Officials operating out of Nahan have approached village panchayat heads demanding contributions of two thousand rupees each to support the festival. This collection drive has triggered sharp resentment among local representatives, who view the financial burden placed on panchayats as unwarranted and unfair. Yashpal, the pradhan of Kala Amb panchayat in the industrial belt, voiced these concerns while addressing the media in Nahan.
Panchayat Representatives Object to Funding Mandate
Panchayat head Yashpal strongly condemned the demand, asserting that village councils bear direct responsibility for civic works, infrastructure development, and local welfare programs in their jurisdictions. He questioned the administrative rationale behind asking pradhans to deliver funds for a cultural fair when grassroots funds are meant to serve rural communities. Seeking contributions under these circumstances, he noted, puts unnecessary fiscal pressure on rural governance bodies that are already managing tight local priorities.
Call to Curb Lavish Spending on Outside Performers
Yashpal also urged the Shri Renuka Ji Development Board to eliminate unnecessary expenditure on performers invited from other states. He highlighted that substantial sums are regularly squandered on booking Punjabi singers for Himachal fairs, despite these individuals providing no assistance when the hill state grapples with natural disasters. Giving performance platforms to regional artists from Himachal Pradesh would instead nurture home-grown talent and save lakhs of rupees in festival budgets.
Fiscal Crunch and Prior Instances of Fund Collections
The Sukhu administration in Himachal Pradesh is currently navigating serious economic constraints, which has triggered acute resource shortages for staging district-level festivals and fairs. Similar contentious revenue drives have taken place previously under the state government. During the Kangra Carnival, directives were issued to collect funds from petrol pump operators, and official instructions to mobilize external funding had also been released for the Renuka fair in the preceding year.
Sacred Fair Scheduled for November 19 to 24, 2026
The Shri Renuka Ji international fair in Sirmaur is scheduled to take place between November 19 and November 24, 2026. The annual pilgrimage commemorates the sacred reunion of Lord Parashurama with his mother, Goddess Renuka. According to regional beliefs, the revered site is the birthplace of Lord Parashurama, revered as the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Goddess Renuka was the consort of sage Jamadagni. After King Sahastrabahu killed sage Jamadagni, a grief-stricken Goddess Renuka leaped into the Ram Sarovar, which later came to be recognized as Renuka Lake. Tradition holds that when she entered the waters, the lake assumed the contour of a reclining woman, an outline that remains clearly visible when observed from the surrounding hills.
