Premium large format theatres are overhauling their schedules as audience demand reshapes the autumn box office. Christopher Nolan’s global spectacle The Odyssey is officially heading back to IMAX and prestigious IMAX 70mm screens. The sudden scheduling shift comes as moviegoers continue to seek out the Greek epic in the highest quality format available, prompting cinema programmers to act swiftly and capitalise on its enduring momentum.
A Tale of Two Box Office Fortunes
The decision follows starkly contrasting commercial outcomes for two major Hollywood releases. Christopher Nolan’s summer release has proven to be an absolute box office juggernaut, generating an incredible tally of $1.76 billion worldwide and continuing to rise. In stark contrast, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s latest feature Digger, featuring a heavily made-up Tom Cruise, delivered an unexpectedly sluggish opening weekend. The high-profile release managed to collect only $20 million across global markets in its initial run, creating immediate pressure on wide-format screen allocations.
VistaVision Release Faces Shorter Window as Blockbusters Queue Up
Much like Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, Digger was shot entirely on celluloid utilizing the VistaVision format and made its debut on IMAX screens on Friday, October 2. However, with demand waning quickly, theatre operators confirmed that The Odyssey will reclaim IMAX and IMAX 70mm auditoriums starting October 9. While London's flagship BFI IMAX venue will split showtimes between both titles through Thursday, October 15, audiences eager to catch Iñárritu’s drama in premium auditoriums face a very tight window. The premium calendar remains intensely competitive, with Street Fighter scheduled for October 16 and Godzilla Minus Zero arriving on November 3, alongside lingering demand for additional screenings of Nolan's runaway hit.
