A major Hollywood crime thriller franchise is officially preparing its return to cinemas with a third instalment. The upcoming film marks the full reunion of the original lead trio, with Emily Blunt, Benicio Del Toro, and Josh Brolin all reprising their acclaimed roles. Production is actively underway under the production banners of Black Label Media and Thunder Road, confirming the development of an unexpected trilogy conclusion that brings the central characters back together.
The Trajectory of the Franchise
The cinematic universe originated in 2015 when filmmaker Denis Villeneuve delivered Sicario, a relentless examination of the brutal War on Drugs that rapidly gained recognition as one of the standout thrillers of the twenty first century. The first entry introduced audiences to kidnap response specialist Kate Macer, portrayed by Emily Blunt, alongside the Department of Defense operative duo composed of Matt, played by Josh Brolin, and Alejandro, played by Benicio Del Toro. A follow-up arrived in 2018 with Sicario 2: Day of the Soldado, maintaining high tension despite the absence of Villeneuve, Blunt, and Academy Award winning cinematographer Roger Deakins. Now, the story is set to culminate with all three original core leads returning to the screen.
Creative Team and Screenplay Development
Directorial duties for this chapter have been handed to Padraic McKinley, who recently helmed the Ethan Hawke period drama The Weight. The screenplay is written by Steven Knight, well known as the creator of Peaky Blinders and the screenwriter attached to Bond 26. Franchise originator Taylor Sheridan is not expected to participate in the making of this threequel. While specific plot details remain closely guarded, an initial screenplay draft was completed, and that version proved compelling enough to secure the return commitments of Blunt, Del Toro, and Brolin.
Production Timelines and Upcoming Slate
Currently, McKinley and Knight are refining the script with direct feedback and creative input from the lead actors. The target schedule points toward cameras rolling potentially as early as the start of 2027. Ahead of this production, audiences can see McKinley's gritty directorial aesthetic in The Weight, which is currently playing in cinemas. Meanwhile, Brolin has two major releases lined up, including the sperm whale survival thriller Whalefall and the final entry in another Villeneuve directed trilogy, Dune: Part Three.
