Talk of The Conjuring franchise winding down after 2025's grimly titled Last Rites has turned out to be premature. Not only has an HBO Max spin-off series already been greenlit to keep the story of the world's highest-grossing horror movie series going, but a prequel film titled The Conjuring: First Communion is now in production, and its two lead actors have been revealed. The Conjuring films remain the highest-grossing horror franchise ever made at the box office, which explains why its makers are in no hurry to close the book on it.
Who Plays the Young Warrens
The Conjuring: First Communion will explore the early days of real life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, long before Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga made the couple famous on screen. Garrett Wareing, who appeared in The Long Walk, has been cast as the younger Ed Warren. Playing opposite him as a young Lorraine Warren is Amanda Fix, who is also due to appear in Jane Schoenbrun's upcoming film Teenage Sex And Death At Camp Miasma. Details of the film's plot are being kept under wraps for now, though given the subject matter, some kind of demonic encounter for the young couple seems inevitable.
The Team Behind First Communion
The Conjuring: First Communion marks the feature directing debut of Rodrigue Huart. The screenplay comes from Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, the writing duo behind The Autopsy Of Jane Doe. Beyond the two lead castings, few other details about the production, or about the previously announced HBO Max series set in the same universe, have been made public so far. With filming now officially underway on First Communion, more news and first look details are expected to emerge over the coming weeks and months.
Release Date and What's Next
The Conjuring: First Communion currently has a cinema release date of 10 September, 2027. That places it a few months after The Revenge of La Llorona, a sequel connected to the Conjuring Universe through The Curse of La Llorona, which is scheduled for 9 April, 2027. With shooting only just beginning, audiences have just over a year left to wait before returning to the Warrens' world once again.
