Production has officially kicked off on the upcoming feature Miami Vice 85 review (2026), bringing a fresh cinematic spin to the iconic television property. Hollywood has spent quite some time discussing this modern reimagining of the classic eighties television format, and cameras are finally rolling with substantial creative forces involved both behind the scenes and in front of the lens. The production aims to capture a major summer blockbuster feel by pairing high-profile stars with a proven behind-the-camera crew.
Directing and Leading Cast
Taking the lead in this updated cops-versus-crime dynamic are Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, stepping into the legendary shoes of Ricardo Tubbs and Sonny Crockett, respectively. Audiences have already been treated to an initial look at the pair suited up in their signature costumes. Directing duties belong to Joseph Kosinski, the filmmaker behind Top Gun: Maverick, following his previous work on the racing feature F1.
Writing Team and Ensemble Cast
The screenplay for this new iteration comes courtesy of Dan Gilroy, who previously collaborated with his brother Tony on Andor and wrote and directed the thriller Nightcrawler. Joining Jordan and Butler is a massive ensemble cast featuring Alden Ehrenreich, John Leguizamo, Walton Goggins, André Holland, Whitney Peak, Danny Ramirez, and several others. This expansive roster builds upon a legacy established by the original Miami Vice show that aired from 1984 through 1990 starring Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson, as well as Michael Mann’s 2006 film adaptation featuring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx.
Release Schedule and Franchise History
Studio plans currently slate the new film for a theatrical debut in May 2028, aiming to deliver a stylish dose of warm-weather entertainment. Franchise enthusiasts also have the recent premiere of the Director's Final Cut for the Michael Mann original at Beyond Fest to enjoy while production moves forward.
