A significant milestone has been marked in the Kashmir Valley with the arrival of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh through its affiliate, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, which has established an office in the Barsoo village of Pulwama. Known historically for violence, terrorism, and stone-pelting incidents, this newly set up single-story office stands just five kilometers away from Lethpora, the site where 40 security personnel lost their lives in a devastating suicide attack back in 2019. Nestled quietly beneath the Zabarwan mountains in a peaceful village once regarded as a hotbed of unrest, the building features modern security measures including surveillance cameras, though it deliberately maintains a low profile without prominent banners, flying flags, or large signboards, displaying only a modest marker reading office while heavily guarded by local police forces outside.
Security Measures and Office Setup
The newly constructed facility serves as a silent witness to the evolving socio-political landscape of the region. Designed with utmost simplicity, the single-story building houses a few rooms where security personnel remain stationed outside to ensure safety. Unlike traditional political or ideological headquarters, this establishment avoids flashy displays, featuring only a basic sign that simply says office. This marks the very first public and permanent physical footprint of an RSS-affiliated outfit operating openly in the Kashmir Valley. Following the revocation of Article 370 in the year 2020, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, which had been operating quietly for years, decided on this calculated and simple step, gradually opening its doors to the general public as local unions increasingly aligned with its overarching mission.
Core Objectives and Working Philosophy
Operating as an independent entity, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh primarily dedicates its efforts toward safeguarding the rights, ensuring legal entitlements, and upholding the dignity of workers across the country. Establishing such an office in a sensitive district like Pulwama demonstrates that local residents are increasingly viewing labor welfare through the lens of workers' rights rather than traditional politics or religion. The outfit's future roadmap centers on empowering the working class to secure legitimate benefits while actively contributing to national development. Although the organization initially faced certain misconceptions and misinformation within local society, those doubts dissolved as workers from various sectors began joining hands and realizing that the core motivation centers entirely on national growth alongside labor welfare.
Rationale Behind Choosing Pulwama
The decision to set up this divisional headquarters in Pulwama was driven by two key factors. First, the security situation underwent a massive transformation following the removal of Article 370 in 2019, transitioning away from frequent strikes and stone-pelting toward an environment where youth focus heavily on education and career progression. Second, the vast majority of affiliated labor unions operate in South Kashmir, making Pulwama an ideal central location that grants easy accessibility for workers commuting from both North and South Kashmir. With over 20 registered labor unions and thousands of members now part of the network, workers engage without facing inquiries regarding their religion or political affiliations, focusing entirely on collective betterment and service.
