Ladakh is poised to welcome its very first medical institution, with academic operations expected to kick off from the 2027-28 academic session. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has cleared the recruitment of faculty and supporting staff for the proposed government medical college located at Stipuk Farkha in Leh. To ensure the project meets its scheduled timeline, a one-time relaxation has been granted to initiate the recruitment process before 80 percent of the physical infrastructure construction is completed.
Details of the Administrative Approval and Posts
Through an official communication dated October 13, 2026, the health ministry informed the Commissioner-Secretary of Ladakh's Health and Medical Education Department about the clearance. According to the ministry, the Department of Expenditure under the Ministry of Finance reviewed the proposal and granted its consent with specific conditions. A total of 103 regular positions for the college were initially sanctioned via an expenditure department note on November 27, 2024. Recruitment for these positions will be conducted in a phased manner to align with the evolving academic requirements leading up to the 2027-28 session, following a formal proposal sent by the Ladakh administration on August 5, 2026.
Official Response and Interim Arrangements
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena welcomed the decision and expressed gratitude to Union Health Minister JP Nadda. He posted on X that he had requested a waiver regarding the 80 percent infrastructure completion rule to enable timely hiring of faculty and staff. The ministry has mandated that all positions must be filled on a regular basis in accordance with established recruitment rules. Any interim arrangements made until the permanent campus at Stipuk Farkha is ready will remain strictly temporary. Once the permanent facility is established, all operations must be shifted there, and the expenditure department must be formally notified.
Impact on Local Education and Healthcare
The establishment of this medical college fulfills a long-standing demand of the region's population. The new institute will significantly reduce the need for local students to travel outside the region for medical education. Furthermore, it is expected to greatly bolster healthcare delivery across Ladakh, where harsh climatic conditions and challenging terrain have historically limited access to specialized medical services. Training doctors and healthcare professionals locally will ensure a steady supply of medical personnel to serve the remote population, with the administration aiming to have everything ready to welcome the first batch of students by 2027-28.
