Jharkhand's Urban Development Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu has died of a heart attack. The news came on 6 September 2026. Sonu did not hold only the Urban Development portfolio, he was also responsible for several other departments, which meant his role carried significant weight in the day to day functioning of the Jharkhand government.
Who was Sudivya Kumar Sonu
Sudivya Kumar Sonu was a leader associated with the Giridih region and held a ministerial berth in the Jharkhand government led by the JMM. He had chaired review meetings of the Urban Development and Housing department, repeatedly pushing for city development to follow proper master plans. He also held charge of several other state departments, which is why his position in the cabinet was seen as an important one.
The major scheme he had recently launched
On 14 May 2026, Sonu launched an online portal to implement the provisions of the Jharkhand Building Regularisation Rules, 2026. Through this portal, unauthorised houses built across the state could be regularised, with owners of buildings up to 300 square feet given special relief. He had personally explained that people could apply on the portal and get their houses regularised with ease.
Recent events tied to Giridih
In August 2026, during a Van Mahotsav event held in Giridih, the stage suddenly collapsed, and everyone on it, including Sudivya Kumar Sonu, fell to the ground. He escaped unhurt in the incident, and the programme was resumed after chairs were arranged again. Earlier, in May 2026, a poor road condition in his own constituency in Giridih had caused hardship to a pregnant woman, raising questions about development work lagging in his area.
His remarks on the 2029 election
In July 2026, the JMM dealt a blow to the BJP in Giridih, and around the same time, this minister from the Hemant government had made a significant claim about the 2029 election. It is now being seen as one of his last major political remarks.
