Morabadi ground in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, witnessed a massive gathering of tribal community members from across the state last Sunday. The historic rally, dubbed the Adivasi Ekta Mahajutan, was convened by Congress leader and former state minister Bandhu Tirkey. Displays on the main stage prominently featured large photographs of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and JMM leader cum Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, signaling unity within the ruling alliance. However, despite the eager expectations of the crowd, neither leader appeared in person. Rahul Gandhi sent a written message to register his virtual presence, while Hemant Soren opted to send Mander MLA Vikas Kumar Munda as the JMM representative for formal representation. The Chief Minister's decision to stay away from such a significant platform despite being present in Ranchi has ignited widespread political debate across the state.
Massive Tribal Gathering and the Surprising Absence on Stage

While the Mahajutan was an undeniable success in terms of crowd size, it raised uncomfortable political questions. A major point of contention is whether the gathering represented the broader tribal population or primarily Christian converts responding to the Church's call. Furthermore, Hemant Soren's absence remains puzzling. Political leaders typically capitalize on large turnouts, which often require substantial organizational expenditure to assemble. With Bandhu Tirkey bringing thousands to Morabadi ground organically, the platform offered Hemant Soren an ideal setting to highlight government achievements, outline future initiatives, and deliver a stern warning to political rivals. Observers suggest several potential reasons behind Hemant Soren's decision. First, the overt endorsement from the Catholic Church may have risked alienating Sarna tribals, a dynamic the BJP was closely watching to exploit. Second, Hemant Soren might be contemplating a position on delimitation that aligns more closely with the Central Government. BJP Leader Champai Soren Launches Scathing Attack on Congress
Former Jharkhand CM and BJP leader Champai Soren launched a sharp critique of the rally, taking to social media to claim that viral letters from Christian religious leaders confirmed the event was primarily a convention of converted Christians rather than indigenous tribals. Turning his focus to the delimitation issue, Champai Soren asserted that Congress lacks the moral authority to speak on tribal rights. He cited historical data, noting that in 2008 under Congress rule, ST reserved seats in the Mayurbhanj district of neighboring Odisha were reduced from 9 to 7. Similarly, ST reserved seats in Chhattisgarh were slashed from 34 to 29.
Champai Soren further targeted Congress's historical record, recalling that in 1967, Congress shelved the Delisting Bill introduced by Baba Kartik Oraon, thereby threatening the cultural identity of tribal communities. He also pointed out that Congress removed the Tribal Religion Code in 1961 and alleged that the party had authorized police firing on tribal demonstrators on multiple occasions in the past. Champai Soren alleged that Congress actively favors converted Christians, who he claimed occupy over 90 percent of reserved government jobs intended for tribals. He blamed these policies for the locking of sacred Jaher Sthan and Sarna sites in districts such as Simdega, Pakur, and Sahebganj.
Alliance Dynamics and the Rising Stature of Bandhu Tirkey
Delimitation remained the central theme of the Mahajutan. Hemant Soren has publicly opposed delimitation criteria that threaten to reduce tribal representation, sharing concerns similar to those voiced at the rally. Had he addressed the Morabadi gathering as JMM chief, the message of opposition would have carried significantly more weight. Instead, his absence allowed Congress leader and former state minister Bandhu Tirkey to capture the political spotlight and emerge as the key figure of the event.
Reacting to the developments, BJP leader and former state minister Bhanu Pratap Shahi remarked that Bandhu Tirkey ji had effectively challenged Hemant Soren's status by positioning himself as a dominant leader within the INDI Alliance. By organizing a successful mass rally, Bandhu Tirkey demonstrated his strong grassroots connection among the tribal population to the Congress leadership. Discussions in political circles now suggest that Bandhu Tirkey's influence among tribals currently rivals or surpasses that of the Chief Minister.
