As the monsoon season draws to a close, maize crops enter a critical growth phase marked by rapid height expansion and the formation of young cobs across agricultural fields. However, this period of development also exposes the crop to a heightened risk of severe fungal diseases and destructive insect infestations that can diminish both harvest volume and grain quality. To help farmers protect their yield, agricultural expert and Block Technical Manager Ajay Tirkey in Bokaro has detailed key identification symptoms and effective management strategies using targeted chemical treatments and biological control methods.
Identifying and Controlling Downy Mildew
Downy mildew stands out as one of the primary fungal threats to maize cultivation. According to agricultural expert Ajay Tirkey, the disease typically presents itself roughly two to three weeks after seedlings emerge from the soil. Once infected, the plant foliage develops distinct elongated stripes, and the overall vegetative growth of the crop comes to a complete halt.
To curb the spread of downy mildew, timely application of fungicide is necessary. Farmers are advised to prepare a spray solution by mixing Ridomil MZ at a rate of 1.5 grams per liter of water. Administering two sprays, adjusted according to the intensity of the disease in the field, effectively shields the crop from long-term damage and allows normal development to resume.
Leaf Blight Symptoms and Management Methods
Leaf blight poses another major challenge for maize growers during the post-monsoon period. This fungal infection manifests as long, boat-shaped brown lesions on the leaf surfaces. Starting on lower leaves, the spots gradually spread toward the upper canopy. Under severe infestation conditions, the entire plant can dry up completely, leading to extensive crop loss.
Effective management of leaf blight requires spraying recommended doses of Zineb or Zinc Manganese Carbonate onto affected plants. Farmers seeking an organic approach can utilize neem decoction. Mixing approximately 250 ml of neem decoction per pump of water and applying it thoroughly across the crop provides a reliable natural line of defense against the blight.
Fungal Spot Diseases and Dosage Guidelines
General fungal spot infections in maize manifest through distinct creasing or wrinkling on the leaves along with brown patches. A yellow margin or border forms around these brown spots, causing the leaves to dry out progressively over time. Spotting these symptoms at an early stage allows farmers to intervene before widespread damage occurs.
Upon noticing the first signs of fungal spots, farmers should apply Mancozeb at a concentration of 0.2 percent, equivalent to 2 grams per liter of water. Depending on crop requirements, one or two additional sprays can be carried out at intervals of approximately 10 days to ensure complete disease suppression.
Stem Borer Damage and Treatment Options
Insect pests present a major hurdle alongside fungal infections, with the stem borer being among the most damaging. This pest drills into the core of the maize stem, feeding on internal plant tissue. Early stage attacks leave the plant weakened, resulting in underdeveloped, undersized cobs. During periods of strong winds, these weakened stems are prone to snapping and lodging.
To control stem borer populations, farmers should apply granular formulations such as Fipronil 0.3 G or Cartap Hydrochloride 4 G directly into the central whorl of the plants about two weeks after seed germination. If standing crop protection is required later, spraying Cartap or Imidacloprid 17.8 SL at prescribed doses effectively minimizes pest damage.
Fall Armyworm Threat and Integrated Management
The Fall Armyworm is widely recognized as the most destructive insect pest affecting maize crops due to its rapid reproductive capacity. Female moths lay large clusters of eggs throughout their lifecycle. In their early stages, larvae appear light green, pinkish, or brown. The larvae cause severe damage by consuming leaf edges, feeding on the lower leaf surfaces, and invading the cobs directly.
The larval stage matures into adult moths within roughly 14 to 18 days, after which the new generation lays more eggs to continue destroying the crop. To manage Fall Armyworm infestations, farmers are encouraged to deploy Trichoderma along with pheromone traps. Pheromone traps attract and capture flying adult male moths, interrupting their breeding cycle and reducing egg-laying activity across the field.
