Jharkhand is bracing for a fully active monsoon spell today, with the India Meteorological Department warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and lightning across several districts of the state. According to the weather department, southern, central and eastern Jharkhand are likely to see the worst conditions, while some districts in the north-western belt may only get light to moderate rainfall. Ranchi, Gumla and Bokaro are among the 10 districts expecting rain today, and wind speeds during this spell could touch 40 to 60 kilometres per hour.
The districts flagged as most vulnerable to heavy rain and gusty winds today are Ranchi, Khunti, Ramgarh, Bokaro, East Singhbhum (Jamshedpur), West Singhbhum (Chaibasa), Saraikela Kharsawan, Gumla, Simdega and Lohardaga. These areas are expected to see heavy to moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds and thunder. In some pockets wind speed may reach 40 to 60 kilometres per hour, raising the risk of trees being uprooted and temporary structures getting damaged.
Where the lightning risk is highest
The Ranchi meteorological office has flagged a high risk of lightning strikes today across Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Simdega, Saraikela Kharsawan, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Bokaro. The department has advised people to avoid standing in open fields, taking shelter under trees, or staying close to electric poles during bad weather, since these are exactly the spots where lightning strikes are most dangerous.
Palamu, Garhwa, Chatra and Latehar to stay hot and humid
Despite the widespread rain, temperatures in the north-western parts of the state are expected to stay relatively high. Palamu, Garhwa, Chatra, Latehar and a few neighbouring districts could see maximum temperatures ranging between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. With rainfall activity comparatively lower in these districts, residents there are likely to experience humid, sticky heat even as the rest of the state gets drenched.
Netarhat, Khunti and Lohardaga set for pleasant weather
On the other hand, continuous cloud cover and ongoing rain are expected to keep maximum temperatures between 27 and 30 degrees Celsius in Ranchi, the Netarhat region, Khunti, Gumla, Simdega, Lohardaga and West Singhbhum. Weather in these districts is expected to remain comparatively cool and pleasant, offering residents some relief from the heat.
Monsoon most active over southern and eastern Jharkhand
The monsoon's strongest impact today will be felt in southern and eastern Jharkhand. The Ranchi division and the Kolhan region are likely to see persistent cloud cover along with intermittent heavy rain and thunderstorm activity. The weather department has cautioned that localised waterlogging on roads and in low-lying areas could occur in these regions, potentially disrupting movement.
Districts where daily life could be hit hardest
The worst weather conditions today are expected in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Saraikela Kharsawan, West Singhbhum, Khunti and Gumla. Heavy rain, storms, lightning and, in some spots, very heavy rainfall could disrupt normal life in these districts. The weather department has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel unless essential and to keep a close watch on official weather warnings.
Where it rained on Monday
A day earlier, on Monday, good rainfall was recorded in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Khunti, Gumla and several surrounding areas. The weather department had already issued an alert for heavy rain and strong winds in these districts, and the impact was clearly visible on the ground. Heavy rain in some places also brought temperatures down and eased the humidity, giving residents some relief.
