The monsoon is set to intensify across Jharkhand once again today. According to the Ranchi Meteorological Department, clouds will cover most parts of the state, and several districts are likely to see light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder, lightning and gusty winds. Rainfall activity is expected to be relatively higher in the southern, central and eastern districts, while the north-western belt continues to battle humidity and heat. Wind speeds could touch 40 to 60 km/h during this spell, and temperatures are expected to range between 28°C and 33°C. In all, an alert has been issued for 13 districts of the state today, including Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla and Simdega.

Where rain is expected today

Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is forecast today for Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Simdega, Lohardaga, West Singhbhum, East Singhbhum, Saraikela-Kharsawan, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Giridih, Dhanbad and Deoghar. The weather department has said some pockets within these districts could also witness heavy spells. Notably, these same areas recorded good rainfall a day earlier, on July 1, with Deoghar, Ranchi, Dhanbad and Bokaro logging between 10mm and 60mm of rain.

Stay alert for strong winds and lightning

The Ranchi Meteorological Department has issued a warning for winds of 40 to 60 km/h along with thunder and lightning across several parts of the state today. The warning specifically covers Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Simdega, East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, Saraikela-Kharsawan, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Giridih and the surrounding areas. Residents have been advised to stay away from open fields, trees and electric poles during the bad weather. The department has also warned that heavy rain in some spots could trigger waterlogging or flood-like conditions, urging people to take precautions.

Where the weather will feel most pleasant

Thanks to the rain, the weather is expected to be most pleasant today in Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Simdega, West Singhbhum and East Singhbhum. Maximum temperatures in these districts will hover between 28°C and 33°C, offering people significant relief from the heat, with humidity levels also comparatively lower.

Where the heat and humidity will still bite

In the north-western districts of Palamu, Garhwa, Chatra and Latehar, humidity is expected to remain high despite cloud cover. Palamu, or Daltonganj, could be among the hottest spots, with the maximum temperature likely to reach 32°C to 33°C. Ranchi and Jamshedpur are expected to stay around 29°C to 31°C, while the minimum temperature could range between 23°C and 25°C. The heat and humidity will be felt most strongly in the gaps between spells of rain.

How much it rained in the last 24 hours

Several districts of Jharkhand also recorded light to moderate rain over the past 24 hours. Jamshedpur logged around 0.8mm of rainfall, while parts of the southern and eastern districts also saw showers. The rain brought down temperatures in many areas, keeping the weather relatively comfortable.

What this means for you

  • Across India: With the monsoon active, several other states could see similar spells of thunder and gusty winds, so it is worth checking weather updates before planning travel or farm work.
  • In Jharkhand: People in Ranchi, Khunti, Gumla, Simdega and the other alerted districts should avoid open fields, trees and electric poles during storms and stay cautious in low-lying, waterlogging-prone areas.
