A dramatic anti corruption operation in Kerala's Malappuram district saw a government employee make a desperate attempt to destroy evidence by flushing bribe currency notes down a toilet bowl. When vigilance officials knocked on the door of Public Health Inspector Sreeji in Thirurangadi, the panicked official immediately dumped the illicit cash into the commode and pulled the flush. However, the investigating team refused to back down, dismantling the drainage plumbing to successfully retrieve the entire amount of 10,000 rupees.
Bribe Demanded for Restaurant and Juice Stall Clearance
The incident originated within the Thirurangadi Municipality, where Public Health Inspector Sreeji was handling regulatory approvals for local food businesses. A non resident Indian woman had recently set up a new hotel and juice stall in the area, requiring mandatory operational and sanitation clearances from the civic body. When she approached the municipal health department for the required permit, Sreeji allegedly demanded an illegal payment of 10,000 rupees to clear and issue the official license.
Unwilling to yield to the extortion demand, the woman decided to bring the matter before the state vigilance authorities. Upon receiving her formal complaint, the anti corruption unit verified the details and designed a trap to catch the municipal officer red handed. Following procedural protocols, vigilance officers instructed the entrepreneur to proceed with handing over the demanded cash under monitored conditions.
Cash Handover at Rented Residence and the Panic Flush
In accordance with the operational plan, the complainant travelled to Sreeji's rented residence, where the health inspector received the 10,000 rupees. As soon as the financial transaction took place, the woman exited the premises, signalling the waiting vigilance team. The officials promptly moved in and knocked on the front door to initiate their search and apprehension procedure.
Realising that enforcement officers were outside, Sreeji panicked and sought to erase any direct connection to the cash before opening the door. He rushed to the bathroom, threw all the currency notes into the toilet pan, and flushed the system, assuming the water flow would wash the paper notes completely out of reach. When officers gained entry, the physical cash was nowhere in sight in the living quarters, prompting intensive questioning regarding the missing funds.
Dismantling Plumbing to Recover Submerged Evidence
Faced with rigorous questioning by the vigilance team, Sreeji eventually conceded that he had flushed the entire bribe sum down the toilet only moments before letting them inside. Rather than treating the evidence as lost, the vigilance team initiated an on site recovery mission, bringing in tools to inspect the drainage network serving the rented house.
Investigators removed the toilet fixture and gained direct access to the waste pipe structure. High pressure water was introduced into the conduit to dislodge any obstructions caught inside the plumbing bends. After careful examination of the drainage run, officers located the soaked 10,000 rupees lodged firmly in an elbow bend of the pipe. The plumbing curve had prevented the money from reaching the municipal sewer line, enabling the vigilance unit to secure the crucial cash evidence and formalise corruption charges against the inspector.
