Operating through challenging weather and turbulent marine conditions, the Indian Coast Guard has successfully carried out a high-stakes medical evacuation to save a critically ill 66-year-old patient. The individual required immediate advanced medical intervention, prompting a swift coordinated airlift operation from the remote islands of Lakshadweep to mainland healthcare facilities.
Coordinated Airlift Operation From Agatti to Kochi
The humanitarian mission was executed through close operational synergy between the Lakshadweep Union Territory administration and the Coast Guard district headquarters located in Kochi and Kavaratti. Medical evaluations revealed that the elderly patient required urgent neurosurgical care and needed continuous supplemental oxygen support throughout the transit to prevent further health deterioration.
To facilitate the urgent transfer, a specialized Dornier aircraft was scrambled from the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Kochi to Agatti. Confronted with adverse en-route weather and the fragile health of the patient, the aircrew maintained essential in-flight oxygen support without interruption. The aircraft touched down safely in Kochi, ensuring the patient was smoothly transitioned to advanced tertiary medical care.
Parallel Rescue Operation off Diglipur
This mission follows another recent nighttime rescue operation conducted by the maritime force amidst rough seas in the Bay of Bengal region. The Coast Guard saved a distressed foreign mariner near Diglipur after receiving an alert via the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Vijayapuram.
The incident involved a 36-year-old Bangladeshi crew member aboard the vessel MV Emeris who suffered severe injuries to his head and spine after an accidental fall on the ship. Acting promptly on the alert, the Andaman and Nicobar Coast Guard headquarters dispatched the Indian Coast Guard Ship Rajdoot for medical evacuation. Navigating heavy swells and rough weather, personnel safely transferred the injured sailor to the patrol vessel and administered prompt medical aid.
