The outcome of the local body by-elections across 38 seats in 12 districts has triggered fresh political discussions across Kerala. While the electoral battle primarily witnessed a fierce contest between the state's traditional titans, the Congress-led United Democratic Front and the Left Democratic Front, the polls were equally viewed as a test of credibility for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance. However, when the ballots were tallied, the BJP failed to open its account. Amid this rout, Twenty20, a relatively recent entrant into the NDA fold, managed to retain its seat and saved the coalition from drawing an absolute blank.
Scorecard of the 38 Local Body Seats
A total of 38 local body wards spread over 12 districts went to the polls during these by-elections. In the final tally, the Congress-led UDF emerged at the top by securing 19 seats, closely followed by the ruling LDF, which bagged 18 seats. The BJP failed to score a win in any of the contested seats. The solitary victory for the NDA banner came courtesy of its alliance partner Twenty20, which successfully held onto the Kolenchery East ward in Ernakulam district's Poothrikka Grama Panchayat. Candidate Dinamma, representing Twenty20, clinched the ward by securing 339 votes, ensuring the NDA tallied at least one seat.
Intense Seesaw Battle Between UDF and LDF
The primary battle lines in this electoral exercise were drawn between the UDF and the LDF. Prior to these by-polls, the UDF held 22 of these 38 seats, while the LDF possessed 15. The final results reflected a notable fightback by the Left front, which managed to wrest away 7 seats previously occupied by the UDF. Conversely, the UDF was able to recapture only 4 seats from its rivals. Consequently, the UDF tally dropped by 3 seats, shrinking from 22 down to 19. Meanwhile, the LDF expanded its footprint, rising from 15 seats to 18.
The Emergence of Twenty20 as an Alternative Force
Twenty20 carved out a unique trajectory in Kerala politics, departing significantly from traditional regional parties. The political entity is directly linked to the apparel manufacturing conglomerate KITEX. The president of the party, Sabu M. Jacob, is also the managing director of KITEX. The organization initially garnered nationwide attention in 2015 when it registered a sweeping victory in its home turf, Kizhakkambalam Grama Panchayat. Demonstrating sustained grassroots support, Twenty20 retained control of the Kizhakkambalam Panchayat in the 2025 local elections as well.
Corporate-Style Governance and Expanding Reach
The outfit's institutional connection to KITEX led political analysts and observers across Kerala to describe Twenty20 as a corporate party. Moving away from standard ideological postures, the party anchored its core politics in hyper-local development, welfare delivery, and administrative management. The administrative model established in Kizhakkambalam earned widespread visibility in neighbouring areas as well. Buoyed by its steady local governance record, the outfit progressively expanded its ambition beyond village panchayats and made inroads into legislative politics.
Strong Base in Ernakulam and Early Stance of Neutrality
Ernakulam district has consistently served as the primary stronghold for Twenty20. In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, the party contested across 8 assembly constituencies located within Ernakulam district. During that electoral contest, it garnered approximately 15.3 percent of the popular vote, establishing itself as a credible third element in the district. For years, the party maintained a policy of strict non-alignment, keeping equal distance from both the Congress and the CPM while cultivating its distinct political base.
Alliance Shift: Joining the NDA in January 2026
In January 2026, Twenty20 discarded its established non-alignment posture and officially decided to join the BJP-led NDA. This marked a major strategic departure, as the party had spent prior years consciously branding itself as an independent alternative free from both major fronts. Sabu M. Jacob, president of Twenty20, characterized the entry into the NDA as a well-deliberated move, stating that achieving meaningful systemic change across Kerala while working entirely in isolation was difficult. Following this formal entry, the party contested the 2026 assembly elections alongside the BJP-led coalition.
Significance of the Latest By-Election Verdict
The recent by-election results hold distinct political relevance for Twenty20 and the broader NDA alliance. This by-poll represented the first substantial local electoral test for Twenty20 following its induction into the NDA in January 2026. While the BJP drew a complete blank across all 38 seats, Twenty20's ability to defend its Kolenchery East seat delivered the alliance's single point of success.
