Hair accumulation in the bathroom drain is a widespread household issue. Loose strands washing down during showers slowly travel toward the drainage system and combine with soap scum to form a dense clump inside the pipe. Initially, water drains a bit slower than usual, but if this obstruction is not cleared in time, the pipe can become completely blocked.
When this happens, pouring even a few mugs of water causes pooling in the bathroom, often accompanied by unpleasant odours. Frustrated by this, people frequently rush to purchase expensive commercial drain cleaners from the market. However, minor clogs can be effectively addressed using simple items already available at home. Here is the step-by-step method.
Preparing the Cleaning Mixture at Home
There is no need to make this solution in advance or store it. Prepare it fresh right when you are ready to clean the drain. Take a small bowl and add one small teaspoon of baking soda. Add one teaspoon of citric acid powder to it and mix both ingredients thoroughly. Your dry cleaning powder is now ready for use.
Begin by removing the drain cover or grate carefully. If you can spot loose hair right at the top, pull it out by hand or with the help of a small tool before proceeding further.
Applying the Solution to the Drain
Now, pour the prepared dry powder directly down the drain, making sure it reaches the blocked area deep inside. Following this, slowly pour about half a cup of white vinegar into the drain. As the vinegar reacts with the powder mixture, fizzing and bubbling will occur. Allow this chemical action to work inside the pipe for roughly 15 to 20 minutes.
Flushing with Hot Water
Next, prepare 1 to 2 liters of hot water and pour it gradually down the drain. This helps wash away the loosened soap scum and other debris that was broken down by the earlier effervescent reaction.
The chemical reaction between baking soda, citric acid, and vinegar creates bubbles that help loosen surface grime inside the pipe, while the subsequent hot water flushes the loosened residue away. However, if an exceptionally large and dense clump of hair is wedged tightly inside the pipe, this method might not provide a complete solution on its own.
How to Prevent Future Clogs
Preventing the drain from clogging again involves a few simple habits. Immediately after bathing, clear away any loose hair gathered around the drain opening. Collect these strands using a tissue or paper towel and throw them into the trash bin. Installing a hair-catcher or drain strainer over the opening is also extremely useful. If you notice water draining slower than usual, never ignore the sign. Cleaning out accumulated hair and debris early prevents a major obstruction from forming later.
