Walls enhance the beauty and elegance of any home, and the smoother and shinier they look, the better the overall appeal of the living space. However, when dampness sets in, items placed near the walls begin to get ruined. With the festive season approaching and cleaning underway right after Dussehra, this is the ideal time to find a permanent solution to wall dampness. Most people simply resort to wall putty and fresh paint to hide the moisture, only to watch the paint peel off again after a short while. This raises an important question about what the permanent cure for wall dampness actually is and how it can be permanently eliminated.
Identifying and Fixing the Root Causes of Moisture
Homeowners often spend a significant amount of money on painting, whitewashing, and surface preparation to tackle damp patches, but the moisture returns and the paint flakes off shortly after. To prevent this, one must first investigate where the dampness is originating from. Moisture frequently stems from the roof or a bathroom, or it can be caused by leaking plumbing pipes. If water accumulation on the terrace is causing the seepage, drainage must be fixed immediately, and a waterproof coating can also be applied to the roof. If the source is a bathroom, interior waterproofing becomes necessary. The grout between bathroom tiles often wears out over time, allowing water to seep in, which makes professional grouting inside the bathroom an essential first step for good results.
Using Damp Proof Coatings Correctly
In many cases, wall dampness only appears during the monsoon season and dries up after three or four months, but it continues to weaken the structure of the wall during that time. Sometimes, moisture seeps in from a neighbor's adjoining bathroom. Instead of rushing for routine putty and paint jobs, start by thoroughly scraping the entire wall clean. Once the flaking paint and debris are removed, purchase a damp-proof product from brands like Asian Paints, Dulux, Berger, or any other manufacturer, which costs around 400 rupees. Do not mix any water into this solution. Apply the first coat with a brush, and once it dries completely, apply the second coat. Remember that if the first coat was applied vertically, the second coat must be applied horizontally.
Advanced Waterproofing Solutions and Application
If the dampness problem in the rooms is severe and persistent, you can try an advanced remedy. You can purchase Asian Paints Hydrolock, which costs approximately 600 rupees and acts as an effective waterproofing solution. Alternatively, you can buy Dr. Fixit 302 Super Latex, or Dr. Fixit 301 URP if 302 is unavailable, priced around 380 rupees. Always ensure that Dr. Fixit 302 Super Latex is not more than 18 months old, and Hydrolock should not be older than two years. Apply Hydrolock directly to the wall using a brush without adding any water, running it vertically from top to bottom first, followed by a horizontal coat 12 to 14 hours later. Next, take any standard wall putty, and mix one liter of Dr. Fixit 302 Super Latex per 10 kilograms of putty. For every kilogram of putty, mix 100 ml of Dr. Fixit into water before adding it, and then apply the mixture to the wall.
Sanding and Applying Primer for Longevity
After 4 to 5 hours, once the putty has dried completely, use sandpaper to rub down and smooth the surface. Applying a primer after sanding is crucial because the wall still retains slight moisture and the surface remains rough after putty application. Using a primer ensures that the paint does not fade, displays its true color vividly, and resists early deterioration. It prevents the paint from peeling off in sheets by acting as a strong foundation that reinforces durability. By following these comprehensive steps, homeowners can completely and permanently rid their walls of persistent dampness.
