During the rainy season, dishes like cauliflower curries and stuffed parathas are prepared in many households, but buying cauliflower requires extra caution during this period. In the monsoon, tiny worms and their eggs can remain hidden deep inside the cauliflower florets. From the outside, the vegetable looks completely fresh and clean, but the hidden impurities are not easily visible. Therefore, thorough cleaning is mandatory before cooking it in the kitchen.
Cutting and Soaking in Warm Salt Water
First of all, cut the cauliflower into small pieces. Separating the florets makes it much easier for the hidden pests inside to come out. Next, take lukewarm water in a large bowl and add one to two spoons of salt to it. Now, submerge the cauliflower pieces in this water for about 15 to 20 minutes. Afterward, take the vegetable out and wash it thoroughly with clean water.
Using Vinegar Solution for Deep Cleaning
White vinegar can also be utilized for cleaning cauliflower. Mix about two to three spoons of white vinegar in one liter of water. Keep the cauliflower pieces immersed in this solution for 10 to 15 minutes. Following this, wash the pieces two to three times under running clean water. This helps in successfully eliminating the dirt and pests attached to the vegetable.
The Turmeric and Salt Method
If vinegar is not available at home, turmeric and salt can be used as an alternative. Add half a spoon of turmeric and around two spoons of salt to slightly warm water. Soak the cauliflower in this mixture for roughly 20 minutes. After that, rinse it properly with clean water.
Essential Precautions to Follow
After cleaning the cauliflower, make sure to rinse it under running water at least twice. If you notice black spots, a foul smell, or signs of rotting on the vegetable, avoid using it altogether. During the rainy season, vegetables like cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, and cabbage must be washed with utmost care before cooking. A little bit of precaution helps make your vegetables much cleaner and safer for consumption.
