On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, various delicacies are offered to the child form of Lord Krishna, famously known as Laddu Gopal. Among all offerings, makhan mishri holds a special and significant place. According to traditional beliefs, Lord Krishna was extremely fond of butter, which is why the tradition of preparing fresh butter at home and mixing mishri into it for the Janmashtami bhog is lovingly practiced in many households to this day. If you also wish to prepare pure, fresh, and creamy makhan mishri at home this time for Laddu Gopal, you can make it very easily.
Essential Ingredients for Makhan Mishri
To prepare this traditional offering, you do not need an extensive list of items. You simply require about 500 grams of malai collected from full cream milk, 2 to 3 spoonfuls of chilled water, and mishri according to your taste. Additionally, if you want to make the offering even richer and more flavorful, you can also add a few chopped almonds or pistachios to it.
Step-by-Step Process to Extract Fresh Butter from Malai
To make pure butter at home, first collect the milk cream accumulated daily in an airtight container. For the best taste and texture, malai collected over at least 4 to 5 days can be used. Now, take the malai out of the refrigerator for a little while so that it is not excessively cold and reaches room temperature.
After that, start churning the malai using a traditional churner, a whisk, or a hand blender. Keep adding chilled water to it little by little as you churn. After whisking for a short while, small grains of butter will begin to separate from the cream, and a buttermilk-like liquid will appear at the bottom.
Now, using your hands or a clean strainer, separate the butter completely from the buttermilk. Wash the butter gently 2 to 3 times with clean, cold water. This step removes any residual buttermilk and makes the makhan whiter and tastier. Keep in mind that you should not knead or mash it too harshly while washing.
Transfer the freshly prepared butter into a clean bowl and mix mishri into it according to your taste. If you prefer, you can also add a pinch of crushed green cardamom or finely chopped dry fruits, though simple makhan mishri by itself tastes wonderfully divine for the sacred offering.
Offering Bhog to Laddu Gopal
On the day of Janmashtami, after completing the worship rituals, transfer the prepared makhan mishri into a small silver, brass, or clean bowl and offer it lovingly to Laddu Gopal. Present it with complete devotion and affection during the prayers. This homemade fresh makhan mishri is not only exceptional in taste but also deeply connected to the traditional spirit of Janmashtami.
