Running an air conditioner all day during summer can send your electricity bill soaring, and most people rely only on Cool Mode without realising that using the Fan Mode at the right time can bring the bill down significantly. Here's how it actually works and when it makes sense to switch to it.
How Fan Mode actually works
In Fan Mode, the compressor of the air conditioner shuts off completely and only the indoor fan keeps running. Its job is simply to circulate the cool air already present in the room evenly across the space. Since no fresh cooling happens during this time, power consumption drops sharply compared to Cool Mode. That is why switching to Fan Mode even for a short while shows up directly on the electricity meter.
When to switch to Fan Mode
If a room is already cool enough, or if the weather outside isn't particularly hot, Fan Mode can be used for a while. It keeps air circulating in the room without repeatedly triggering the compressor. This is exactly why many people prefer running Fan Mode late at night or during the rainy season, when the room tends to stay cool anyway.
Less strain on the compressor, easier upkeep
Running an AC continuously on Cool Mode puts constant strain on the compressor. Switching to Fan Mode when appropriate can reduce the unnecessary load on certain parts of the machine. This isn't a guarantee that it will extend the AC's lifespan, but using the modes in a balanced way can genuinely help with the upkeep of the appliance.
What to keep in mind
It's important to remember that Fan Mode does not lower the room's temperature. If a room is already warm, simply switching to Fan Mode will not make it feel cooler. So use this mode only when the room already has sufficient cooling or when the weather is relatively comfortable. Using Fan Mode at the wrong time won't just leave the room feeling warm, it can also affect overall comfort.
Don't forget to clean the air filter
For an air conditioner to perform efficiently, cleaning the air filter from time to time is just as important. A dirty filter reduces airflow, forcing the machine to work harder and pushing up power consumption. Alongside this, keep the room's doors and windows shut so the cool air inside doesn't escape and the AC doesn't have to work under extra pressure.
