Live: Heavy rain lashes several states; IMD sounds alerts for Delhi, Kerala and Maharashtra

A significant industrial crisis emerged in the Khalapur region of Raigad district as relentless downpours and severe flooding caused about 3,000 gas cylinders from an HPCL bottling facility to float away into the Patalganga River, authorities reported on Thursday (July 9, 2026). This event took place at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) bottling facility situated in Chavane, under Panvel taluka. Due to continuous rainfall in Khalapur taluka, the Patalganga River overflowed, and its powerful currents swept a huge inventory of filled as well as empty cylinders into the river. - ANI

Over the past week, monsoon-induced accidents have resulted in three deaths and necessitated the evacuation of around 800 individuals throughout Thane district, while two individuals suffered injuries due to a lightning strike in the most recent incident, officials reported on Thursday (July 9, 2026). According to an official statement by the district administration, the deceased individuals belonged to Thane city, Ambernath, and Mira Bhayander, with one fatality from each location. The weather department sounded this orange alert for the districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. Continuous downpours across the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) early this morning led to major waterlogging in multiple locations, throwing daily routines out of gear and delaying office-goers in Noida and Ghaziabad. Even though the capital witnessed heavy monsoon rains and an unprecedented 228.1 mm of rainfall, leading to 'red' and 'orange' warnings, proactive measures by local bodies prevented widespread flooding. Local administrations executed early cleaning and removed obstructions in major drainage lines, such as those in Narela and Dwarka. This ensured crucial underpasses, including the one at NHPC Chowk, remained open to keep traffic flowing smoothly. Nevertheless, water accumulation persists in certain places, with Geeta Colony witnessing significant flooding after heavy spells. In New Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta personally reviewed the ongoing conditions, instructing all civic and administrative departments to stay on "high alert" to minimize the disruption caused by the rain. - ANI

Three fishermen were safely pulled out of danger after their traditional boat overturned in a river close to Morjim beach in North Goa, authorities announced today. The mishap took place around midday yesterday, after which a local villager informed the state-appointed lifeguard and coastal security agency. A jet ski was quickly dispatched to the location, enabling rescuers to pull two fishermen out of the water, while the third was helped onto a nearby canoe, officials noted. Currently, Goa is experiencing the peak of its southwest monsoon season, characterized by intense winds and choppy waters that make the sea highly hazardous. Consequently, swimming at all beaches in the state remains banned, and the annual seasonal ban on fishing is also active. - PTI

Mumbai residents woke up to cloudy skies but mostly dry conditions today following days of relentless monsoon rains, although the IMD has predicted sporadic showers later in the day. In spite of the cloud cover, rains took a break in a major part of the city this morning, bringing much-needed respite after a long period of wet weather that resulted in severe waterlogging, tree collapses, traffic jams, and delays in local train services. According to the IMD forecast, the city and its suburbs are likely to see a mostly overcast sky with occasional light to moderate rain today. Isolated locations could experience heavy downpours, coupled with lightning, thunder, and wind speeds going up to 40-50 kmph at times, as per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). - PTI

Following the IMD's issuance of a red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall in Wayanad, District Collector D.R. Meghashree announced a holiday for all educational institutions today. This order covers anganwadis, religious classes, tuition centers, special classes, as well as professional colleges. The popular tourist spot Raja's Seat in Madikeri will remain closed to the public between July 9 and 12, following traffic diversions put in place after a landslide occurred near the KSRTC bus station. Due to the landslide, which was caused by heavy rain and strong winds across the Kodagu district over recent days, authorities have ordered all vehicles leaving the private and KSRTC bus stands to take the route via Raja's Seat road. Because of this sudden rise in traffic, and tourists and locals parking vehicles near Raja's Seat, traffic jams have emerged as a constant challenge. The heavy rush in the region has been repeatedly blocking the flow of vehicles, according to a press release issued by the Deputy Commissioner's office. - The Hindu Bureau

The heavy downpours sweeping across parts of Kerala, driven by an off-shore trough along the West Coast, are expected to persist for the next few days. The IMD has put Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, and Malappuram on a yellow alert. According to the weather agency's bulletin, an off-shore trough is extending at mean sea level from southern Gujarat to central Kerala. Showers hit several areas of Delhi during the early hours of today, extending the current rainy spell in the capital and providing much-needed respite to people from the muggy weather. The IMD has sounded an “Orange Alert” for the city, predicting heavy downpours across the region for most part of the day. Incessant rain resulted in minor waterlogging in various areas of the capital, including the New Delhi Railway Station and Munirka, among others. According to the IMD, fairly widespread to widespread rain is anticipated over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh till July 10. A new round of showers is projected to persist over Northeast Uttar Pradesh until July 13, while East Rajasthan is expected to experience similar weather on July 9. - ANI
