Iranian authorities yesterday called on Qatar to free three aviators whose plane crashed during the initial stages of the conflict in West Asia, even as the Gulf nation rejected claims of holding them. Tehran had earlier stated that one aviator died while others went missing following a mission over Qatar in March, though reports of their capture were not made public at that time. According to Fars news agency, General Mohammad Bagherzadeh of the Iranian military stated that Qatari troops took three Iranian aviators alive after their Su-24 combat jets went down during the hostilities. In a communication sent to the International Committee of the Red Cross, he identified the men as Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behraveshian, writing that they have been in Qatari custody for six months.
