Essential Outdoor Safety Measures To Protect Farmers Against Sudden Lightning Strikes During Monsoons

As the monsoon season escalates lightning risks, agricultural workers must follow vital safety guidelines to avoid casualties in open fields.

Sagar experiences a major spike in lightning hazards as the monsoon season sets in. Across Madhya Pradesh and the wider nation, incidents of lightning strikes have surged dramatically, leading to severe loss of human life. Looking at the statistics for Madhya Pradesh in the ongoing monsoon season, more than two dozen individuals have already tragically lost their lives due to lightning strikes. This is a recurring threat, as the state recorded nearly 200 lightning-related fatalities during the 2025 monsoon season. Often, people working outdoors, especially agricultural workers, seek shelter in highly vulnerable spots when sudden downpours begin, turning these temporary refuges into fatal traps. To prevent such tragedies, farmers must adopt strict safety protocols during the rainy season.

Suspending Field Activities and Avoiding Metal Equipment

Modern meteorological departments consistently issue real-time weather forecasts and urgent alerts. Agricultural workers must remain highly attentive to these warnings before heading out to their fields. If you are actively working in the fields and notice sudden dark clouds rolling in accompanied by heavy thunder and lightning, you must suspend all operations immediately. If you are operating any heavy machinery or using tools with metallic components, such as tractors, motor pumps, or pesticide sprayers, step away from them immediately. Metal conducts electricity rapidly, making these items dangerous lightning attractors. Additionally, stay far away from electricity poles, overhead power lines, and wire fencing, which can channel electrical charges over long distances.

Hazards of Seeking Shelter Under Trees and in Open Spaces

During heavy rain, certain natural features present extreme hazards. Open fields, elevated hilltops, and waterlogged zones must be avoided at all costs. A very common and dangerous mistake made by agricultural laborers is running under large trees to escape the rain. Many gather under a single tree in groups. This practice is incredibly risky because tall, isolated trees are highly susceptible to lightning strikes. Standing under them, whether alone or in a crowd, significantly increases the chance of being hit. If a storm catches you in an open area, seeking shelter under a tree is one of the most perilous choices you can make.

Managing Electronic Devices and Adopting the Crouch Position

Electronic communication tools pose silent threats during active thunderstorms. If you have a mobile phone with you in the fields, turn it off completely. Do not use your phone during active lighting and thundering, as operating these devices in such weather increases the likelihood of a strike. Similarly, if you are indoors or near power outlets, never leave your mobile phone or other electronics plugged into chargers during a storm, as power surges can travel through the wiring. If you find yourself stranded in the middle of an expansive, open field with no secure structure nearby, do not panic and do not lie flat on the ground. Lying down increases your contact area with the earth, making you highly vulnerable to ground currents. Instead, squat down close to the ground, keeping your feet tightly together and your hands on your knees, then tuck your head downward. This crouch position minimizes your height and physical footprint, offering the safest stance.

Emergency Assistance, First Aid, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

When a lightning strike occurs and a person is injured, immediate action is paramount. You should immediately dial the emergency number 112 to summon professional medical assistance. If you have your own means of transportation available, do not wait, instead, rush the injured victim to the nearest hospital as quickly as possible to ensure they receive timely medical treatment. A common and dangerous myth is that a person struck by lightning retains an electrical charge and should not be touched. This is entirely false. Victims do not carry any residual charge and are perfectly safe to touch. If the victim has stopped breathing, anyone trained in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) should begin administering it immediately. Providing immediate first aid and maintaining oxygen flow can make the difference between life and death before professional medical help arrives.

What this means for you

  • Across India: Farmers can protect their lives by adopting scientifically proven safety measures against lightning hazards during the monsoon season.
  • In Madhya Pradesh: These precautions can serve as life-saving guidelines to reduce the hundreds of tragic fatalities recorded in the state every monsoon.

Questions & Answers

Why should mobile phones not be used during lightning?
Using active mobile phones during thunderstorms increases the risk of being struck by lightning, so it is safer to turn them off.
What should one do if stuck in an open field with no shelter?
Instead of lying flat, crouch down low with your feet together and tuck your head down to minimize lightning risk.
Is it safe to touch a person who has been struck by lightning?
Yes, it is completely safe to touch the victim as their body does not retain any electrical charge.
Which emergency number should be dialed in case of lightning injuries?
You should immediately dial the emergency number 112 to arrange professional medical help.
