Madhya Pradesh is set for a mixed spell of weather on July 17, with monsoon clouds regaining strength after a stretch of scorching heat and humidity across the state. Moisture-laden winds pulling in from the Bay of Bengal, combined with cyclonic circulations forming over different parts of the country, are reshaping the weather pattern statewide. Over the past few days, several parts of the state saw bright sunshine through the day give way to sudden cloud cover by evening, a pattern now seen as a sign of the monsoon reactivating. Some areas will see light showers while others face gusty winds blowing at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour. The pattern suggests the monsoon is gathering full momentum just before the Sawan month begins. In response, the weather department has issued a yellow alert for several districts and asked residents to stay alert during lightning strikes and thunderstorms.
Yellow alert issued for these districts
The Bhopal weather centre has issued a yellow alert for July 17, 2026, covering a total of 35 districts, Indore, Raisen, Narmadapuram, Betul, Harda, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Dhar, Datia, Bhind, Singrauli, Sidhi, Rewa, Mauganj, Satna, Anuppur, Shahdol, Umaria, Dindori, Katni, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Chhindwara, Panna, Damoh, Sagar, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Niwari, Maihar and Pandhurna. Several areas within these districts could see heavy rainfall in the range of 64.5 to 115.5 millimetres. Winds are also expected to blow at 40 to 50 kilometres per hour in these regions. The weather department has clarified that a yellow warning means people should keep a close watch on conditions, and specifically avoid open fields and areas near trees during lightning and strong winds.
Thunder and lightning likely in these districts
Districts such as Mandla, Balaghat, Dindori, Anuppur and Seoni are also likely to witness rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Cloud cover is expected through the day in these areas, with intermittent strong winds. The weather department says this activity could bring some relief from the heat and cause a slight dip in temperatures.
Gwalior-Chambal division to stay dry
In contrast, the Gwalior and Chambal divisions are not expected to see rainfall for now. Sheopur, Guna, Shivpuri, Ashoknagar, Vidisha, Rajgarh and Mandsaur are forecast to remain dry. Meanwhile, districts including Sagar, Damoh, Niwari, Chhatarpur, Panna, Dewas and Harda could receive light to moderate rain, while several other parts of the state may see light drizzle.
Pachmarhi coolest, Khajuraho hottest in the last 24 hours
Over the past 24 hours, Khajuraho recorded the highest temperature in the state at 38.1 degrees Celsius, while Pachmarhi in Narmadapuram district logged the lowest at 20.2 degrees Celsius. The weather department says no major change in temperature is expected over the next two to three days, meaning the current mix of humidity and rain could continue for a few more days.
