Severe flooding triggered by the overflowing Mandakini River has caused massive devastation in Chitrakoot, breaking records set 90 years ago. The deluge has submerged entire lower storeys of residential houses, leaving behind up to five feet of thick mud and debris inside homes. The disaster has severely crippled normal life across the affected zones, leaving residents grappling with extensive property damage.
The Fury of the Mandakini River
According to updates, the swelling waters of the Mandakini have inundated numerous bridges, ashrams, local shops, and roads. Areas around Ram Ghat and the low-lying Tirhar region remain heavily surrounded by floodwaters. While the water level has now receded below the danger mark, the aftermath reveals widespread destruction, with commercial establishments and dwellings choked in thick layers of silt and filth.
Massive evacuation efforts were launched to aid stranded citizens, with the military rescuing around 800 to 1,000 people from danger zones. Helicopters were deployed to assist in relief and rescue operations across marooned areas. Despite prompt rescue efforts, authorities confirmed that three people lost their lives in the calamity.
Official Inspections and Relief Work
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited the affected areas to take stock of the situation and review ongoing rescue measures. Local administration and disaster response teams are currently engaged in extensive cleanup drives, pumping out water, and distributing essential supplies to the affected populace as the region begins the slow road to recovery.
