In a bizarre incident reported from Satve village in Panhala tehsil of Kolhapur district, a 19-year-old youth stole 15 tolas of gold jewelry from his uncle's house to purchase a brand-new SUV. The theft came to light after the accused committed the ironic blunder of inviting the very victim uncle to the ritual ceremony organized to bless the new vehicle. Kodoli police have arrested the teenager along with a local jeweler who bought the stolen gold ornaments.
The Theft and Sale of Ornaments
The accused has been identified as 19-year-old Samar Popat Chavan, residing in Satve village. Samar lived right next door to his cousin uncle, Umesh Maruti Chavan. Approximately one month prior to the arrest, Samar seized an opportunity when the uncle's home was unattended and stealthily stole 15 tolas of gold jewelry from the premises. Seeking to quickly liquidate the stolen assets, Samar approached a local jeweler in the same village, identified as Sangram Babaso More. Sangram purchased the 15 tolas of stolen gold ornaments from Samar for a cash sum of Rs 10 lakh.
Purchase of Mahindra Thar and Invitation to Ceremony
Upon receiving the cash payment of Rs 10 lakh from the jeweler, Samar immediately went ahead to fulfill his ambition of owning a luxury vehicle. He bought a brand-new Mahindra Thar SUV using the entire cash proceed generated from the stolen gold. After bringing the brand-new vehicle home, Samar organized a traditional worship ceremony to mark the purchase. In an ironic twist of events, he decided to extend a warm invitation to his uncle Umesh Chavan, asking him to attend the vehicle blessing ceremony with the family.
Uncovering the Crime During Event Preparation
The decision to invite his uncle proved to be Samar's ultimate undoing. As Umesh Chavan began getting dressed to attend his nephew's grand vehicle ceremony, he opened his household wardrobe to retrieve his gold jewelry to wear for the occasion. To his shock, he discovered that 15 tolas of gold jewelry belonging to him and his wife had completely vanished from inside the cabinet.
While examining the cabinet, Umesh noticed a peculiar detail: grandmother's gold jewelry, which was stored right beside his own missing valuables, remained entirely untouched and safe. The selective nature of the theft convinced the family that an outsider was not responsible. Instead, the theft was clearly carried out by someone intimately familiar with the household's layout and internal storage habits, pointing directly toward a close relative or neighbor.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Following the discovery of the missing valuables, Umesh Chavan promptly visited the Kodoli police station and submitted a formal written complaint regarding the theft of 15 tolas of gold. Police initiated an immediate inquiry into the matter. During the preliminary investigation, law enforcement officers quickly took note of Samar Chavan's sudden and unexpected financial windfall, as well as his sudden purchase of an expensive Mahindra Thar SUV despite having no apparent source of significant income.
Suspicious of these developments, police brought Samar in for interrogation. Under intense and sustained questioning by the police, the 19-year-old succumbed to the pressure and confessed to breaking into his uncle's house and stealing the 15 tolas of gold ornaments. Samar also disclosed the identity of the jeweler who had purchased the stolen property.
Based on his confession, Kodoli police formally placed main accused Samar Popat Chavan under arrest. Police simultaneously arrested jeweler Sangram Babaso More for knowingly purchasing stolen property. The successful investigation and arrest operation were executed under the supervision of trainee Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Srikant Thikane, alongside a team comprising Police Havaldars Yuvraj Patil and Babaso Kite, as well as Police Constables Mahesh Kadam, Amol Chavan, and Mahesh Shinde. The unusual sequence of events has generated widespread chatter throughout the Satve area.
