The monsoon has turned ferocious across Maharashtra, with extremely heavy to very heavy rain lashing several parts of the state since the early hours of July 2, 2026. Reading the situation, the weather department has placed Mumbai, Raigad, Palghar and Thane under an Orange alert. Forecasters expect the relentless rain to pull Mumbai's temperature down to somewhere between 27 and 23 degrees Celsius. Over the past 24 hours, Mumbai alone has clocked a triple-digit rainfall figure.
The bad weather is biting into air travel as well. Flying conditions at the airport remain fragile, which is why carriers such as Indigo and Akasa Air have put out fresh warnings for arrivals and departures at Mumbai airport.
How Much Rain Fell, and Where
According to the latest BMC data, between 8 AM on July 1, 2026, and 6 AM on July 2, 2026, Mumbai city recorded 134 mm of rain, the eastern suburbs 164 mm and the western suburbs 149 mm.
The weather department's own records show that from 0830 hours IST on July 1 to 0530 hours on July 2, 2026, Santacruz saw the heaviest rainfall at 165.9 mm. It was followed by 164.5 mm at Juhu Airport, 163 mm at Vikhroli, 157 mm at Ram Mandir, 141.5 mm at Bandra, 132 mm at Vidyavihar and 115 mm at Sion.
Waterlogging Brings Life to a Halt
The heavy downpour of the last 24 hours left several areas submerged. Andheri Subway, Wadala, Worli, Bandra Kurla Complex and many other low-lying residential belts were hit by waterlogging. On top of that, Thane district, Ambernath, Kalyan and Bhiwandi were completely flooded, throwing the daily routine of commuters out of gear.
For July 2, the weather department has forecast moderate to intense spells at isolated places. Accordingly, the Orange alert has been issued for Mumbai, Raigad, Palghar and Thane.
Warnings and Safety Advice
Citizens have been urged to take precautions. The key advisories include:
- Avoid staying in weak structures and low-lying areas.
- Keep away from trees, electric poles and wires.
- Stay updated with the latest weather information.
Where Schools Are Closed
Following the red alert on Palghar, the district Collector, Dr Indu Rani Jakhar, declared a school holiday as a precautionary step on Thursday, July 2, 2026. Panvel district has also announced a holiday.
An official statement on whether schools and colleges will stay shut in other places such as Mumbai and Thane district is still awaited. Until then, parents should stay cautious and keep an eye on official BMC announcements, WhatsApp and SMS notifications from schools, and weather updates from the department.
