A tragic structural collapse in Thane has resulted in the death of a young girl, prompting immediate emergency intervention and the complete evacuation of an aging residential building. The incident has once again highlighted safety concerns surrounding older residential structures in the region.
Midnight Collapse in Mumbra
The accident occurred late at night in the Mumbra area of Thane, specifically within the Amritnagar neighborhood near Janta Bakery in Dargah Gali. The structure involved is the Faiyaz Apartment, a ground-plus-four-story residential building that has stood for approximately 38 years. Without warning, the slab of the second-floor gallery suddenly broke away and crashed down onto the first floor, trapping multiple individuals beneath the debris.
Rescue Operations and Fatality
Emergency responders arrived swiftly following alerts from locals. Teams from the fire department, disaster management cell, TDRF, and Mumbra Police rushed to the scene to initiate search and rescue protocols. Emergency personnel successfully extricated six individuals trapped in the wreckage. While five occupants were safely rescued, 13-year-old Asma Kadar Shaikh sustained critical injuries. She was rushed urgently to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where attending physicians pronounced her dead upon examination.
Evacuation and Administrative Action
Municipal records indicate that the 38-year-old building was officially categorized under the C2B dangerous structure bracket. In the wake of the disaster, local authorities ordered an immediate evacuation of the entire premises to prevent any further casualties. Approximately 70 to 80 residents living in the building were temporarily shifted to Thane Municipal Corporation schools numbered 78 and 123. Officials from the public works department and other municipal branches remain stationed at the site to oversee ongoing safety procedures.
