The Union Government on Monday put the upcoming Census operations on hold in Manipur. This development emerged after a comprehensive high-level review session convened in New Delhi under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing widespread local demands to prioritize the rollout of the National Register of Citizens across the region ahead of population enumeration.

Hosted at the Ministry of Home Affairs, the gathering brought together key figures including Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, and Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, alongside other prominent administrative officials. The participants evaluated the prevailing law and order environment while deliberating extensively on the appeals submitted by various public factions, Civil Society Organisations, and collective bodies advocating for NRC implementation before any official census work begins.

Reacting to the central directive, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh conveyed his appreciation to the top leadership, noting that the resolution mirrors the core sentiments and expectations voiced by local residents.

Taking to X, he stated that the central leadership fulfilled the aspirations of the state by deferring the enumeration process. He also credited the persistent outreach conducted by 14 Civil Society Organisations and a delegation of BJP legislators who recently travelled to New Delhi to advocate for the cause.
