Inter-state public road transport connecting Manipur with neighboring regions has officially restarted after remaining halted for more than three years. The resumption of passenger transit on the key Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati route marks a pivotal development in rebuilding transportation networks and restoring normal civilian movement across the violence-impacted state.
Resumed Services and First-Day Travel Numbers
The long-awaited passenger bus operations were suspended following the escalation of ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities on May 3, 2023. Since the eruption of clashes, state authorities had been working to rebuild infrastructure and re-establish secure transit channels. On the first day of restored travel on Friday, a total of 125 passengers made the journey along the designated inter-state corridor. Transport operations commenced with two full-sized passenger buses alongside five smaller Winger vehicles, facilitating smooth movement across state borders.
Strategic Importance of NH-2 and NH-37 Lifelines
Roadways serve as the primary connectivity lifelines for the landlocked state of Manipur, with National Highway 2 (NH-2) and National Highway 37 (NH-37) playing crucial roles in regional logistics. NH-2 links Imphal directly to Dimapur and remains the preferred route for both regular commuters and freight transporters due to its shorter distance and efficient transit times. Conversely, NH-37 connects Manipur to southern Assam by passing through the Barak Valley. However, traffic flow along NH-37 has historically faced frequent disruptions, caused by ongoing security concerns and illegal extortion demands imposed by various local organizations.
Government Directives and Previous Security Obstacles
The decision to reopen state thoroughfares follows an explicit directive issued by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh during his official visit to Kangpokpi on August 8. At the event, he announced the immediate reopening of national highways to ensure unrestricted movement for individuals belonging to all communities. Restoring transportation has previously encountered severe safety challenges. In March of last year, a central initiative aimed at restoring open highway travel triggered widespread agitation, culminating in a violent mob attack on a Manipur State Transport bus in Kangpokpi that left one person dead and several others injured.
Public Reaction and Official Assessment
Official representatives have emphasized the broader social and economic benefits of restoring public transit lines. A formal statement released by the Manipur government highlighted that resuming this long-distance route represents a vital stride toward normalizing daily life and strengthening inter-state linkages, noting that citizens across the region have warmly appreciated the move. Passengers travelling on the inaugural day also shared positive feedback. A commuter from Thoubal district expressed deep gratitude toward the state administration for executing the transit plan, voicing optimism that renewed travel on shared highways will cultivate peace, mutual affection, and harmony among diverse ethnic groups while moving past previous conflicts.
