The long-awaited passenger bus operations were suspended following the escalation of ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki communities on May 3, 2023. Since the eruption of clashes, state authorities had been working to rebuild infrastructure and re-establish secure transit channels. On the first day of restored travel on Friday, a total of 125 passengers made the journey along the designated inter-state corridor. Transport operations commenced with two full-sized passenger buses alongside five smaller Winger vehicles, facilitating smooth movement across state borders.
Strategic Importance of NH-2 and NH-37 Lifelines
Roadways serve as the primary connectivity lifelines for the landlocked state of Manipur, with National Highway 2 (NH-2) and National Highway 37 (NH-37) playing crucial roles in regional logistics. NH-2 links Imphal directly to Dimapur and remains the preferred route for both regular commuters and freight transporters due to its shorter distance and efficient transit times. Restoring transportation has previously encountered severe safety challenges. In March of last year, a central initiative aimed at restoring open highway travel triggered widespread agitation, culminating in a violent mob attack on a Manipur State Transport bus in Kangpokpi that left one person dead and several others injured.
