A newly constructed tribal market facility has been officially opened at Mayophung village in the Ukhrul district of Manipur to boost local trade and empower agricultural producers. Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho inaugurated the infrastructure project on Thursday along National Highway-202, which serves as a vital transit corridor connecting Imphal with Ukhrul. The market structure was built by the Nashira Area People’s Organisation (NAPO) using funds allocated under the 4th State Finance Commission through the Autonomous District Council (ADC), Ukhrul.
Economic Growth and Highway Accessibility
Speaking as the Chief Guest at the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho highlighted the strategic economic advantages of the new trading hub. He emphasized that the facility will generate direct economic opportunities for indigenous farmers by providing a dedicated commercial space to sell their fresh agricultural produce and homemade goods, thereby strengthening local livelihoods across the region.
Dikho pointed out that the strategic position of the market right along National Highway-202 offers maximum accessibility for multiple consumer groups. Beyond serving residents of the immediate Mayophung area, the location allows commuters, traders, and travellers passing between Imphal and neighboring districts to conveniently stop and purchase locally grown products. This commercial model aims to foster local production networks while advancing the broader developmental goal of regional self-reliance in Manipur.
To ensure long-term environmental sustainability and aesthetic appeal, the Deputy Chief Minister announced that the State Environment Department will provide formal assistance to beautify the market facility and upgrade its surrounding premises.
Local Memorandums and Infrastructure Demands
During the event, representatives of the Nashira Area People’s Organisation submitted a detailed memorandum requesting further infrastructural expansion at their headquarters in Mayophung, Ukhrul. Their key demands included the construction of an additional new tribal market shed (ava market), a dedicated public sanitation facility, and a borewell project to resolve water supply needs. Deputy Chief Minister Dikho reviewed the proposals and assured community leaders of necessary state assistance.
A separate representation was also formally presented to the Deputy Chief Minister by members of the All Foothills Tribal Auto Association from Yaingangpokpi in Ukhrul district, seeking administrative attention to regional transport and operational concerns.

The inaugural gathering saw wide participation from regional legislators, traditional leaders, and local authorities.
