Amid growing law and order concerns triggered by escalating public demonstrations, the Manipur state administration has imposed a widespread temporary shutdown of educational premises. As per official directives released by the authorities, all public and private schools, colleges, and higher educational institutes across the state will remain closed for three consecutive days beginning August 20. The precautionary decision aims to maintain public safety and prevent any untoward incidents involving students.
Rising Demands for NRC Update
The primary driver behind the ongoing turmoil is an intense campaign seeking the immediate updating of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) prior to conducting the upcoming census in the state. Spearheading this statewide agitation, the organization known as Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) called for a 48-hour general strike, which significantly disrupted routine activity across multiple districts.
Widespread Street Protests and Political Outrage
On the second day of the strike, agitators took to the streets in several parts of the valley districts in Manipur. Rallies were organized across various locations, where angry demonstrators burnt effigies of several political leaders to mark their protest. Movement representatives reaffirmed their stand that no census activity should proceed without first revising and updating the citizen register.
Boycott of Public Services and Next Steps
Escalating the agitation further, JFD announced a total boycott of all government offices commencing Thursday. Demonstrators stated that their administrative boycott and street protests will continue unabated until the government addresses their core demands and delivers an appropriate resolution.
