Tragedy struck Langka Naga village in Manipur on Friday morning when suspected armed militants launched an unexpected attack on local villagers engaged in agricultural activities. The assault took place around 7:30 am along the crucial Imphal-Tamenglong (IT) Road, disrupting routine farm operations in the rural settlement.
Fatality and Injuries Reported in Morning Firing
A group of heavily armed militants carrying sophisticated weaponry opened fire on the farmers as they worked in their fields. The shooting resulted in the immediate death of 34-year-old W Chawang, who suffered severe gunshot wounds to the head. Three other residents of the village sustained injuries during the attack. The injured individuals have been identified as 55-year-old Kawidinang Abonmai, 52-year-old Maliangjinang Abonmai, and 50-year-old Namthiulungbou Prinmai. Medical sources report that two among the wounded villagers remain in critical condition.
Security Deployment and Regional Search Operations
Immediately after receiving news of the assault, additional security personnel were dispatched to secure the vicinity. Security forces launched comprehensive search operations alongside area-domination exercises across surrounding fringe locations and vulnerable zones to maintain order and curb any potential escalation. Security agencies have maintained similar precautionary operational measures across vulnerable localities in Manipur ever since ethnic violence first erupted in the region three years ago.
Pattern of Conflict and Past Attacks in Langka Naga
Langka Naga village has previously been a flashpoint for armed confrontation. Earlier in June, an attack on the settlement triggered an intense exchange of fire between opposing armed factions, prompting security personnel deployment to stabilize the area. During that earlier violence, suspected Kuki militants reportedly set fire to and destroyed farmhouses belonging to Naga villagers, while also killing a buffalo and a dog present at the location.
