In a significant move to foster lasting harmony across the region, Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has announced plans to establish a dedicated committee representing all 36 communities in the state. The proposed body is designed to serve as a unified platform dedicated to promoting peace, unity, and reconciliation among various ethnic groups.
Response to Prime Minister's Vision
This major development comes on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi raising the question of whether a consolidated framework existed to encourage communal reconciliation and understanding within the state. Yumnam Khemchand Singh made the official announcement on Saturday while addressing a gathering organized to felicitate hill chiefs from multiple tribes at the Chief Minister Secretariat in Imphal.
Festival Celebrations and Infrastructure Milestone
The event took place following the inauguration of the Hill Tribal Chiefs Guest House located at the Palace Compound in Imphal, held as part of the Mera Hou Chongba Festival 2026. The Chief Minister noted that he intends to consult closely with Maharaja Leishemba Sanajaoba and all state legislators before finalizing the formation of the committee. He further urged citizens to back the endeavor, which seeks to deepen inter-community ties and drive inclusive development across the region.
Celebrating Diversity and Shared Heritage
Underscoring Manipur rich ethnic composition, Yumnam Khemchand Singh expressed optimism that the ongoing Mera Hou Chongba festival would pave the way for prosperity while reinforcing fraternal bonds among residents. Mera Hou Chongba is a traditional celebration centered on unity, brotherhood, and harmony among the people of Manipur. The newly opened guest house is anticipated to act as an effective bridge connecting the hill and valley communities.
Honoring Historical Sacrifices
Reflecting on the shared historical background of the region, Singh pointed out that diverse communities have consistently worked together to safeguard Manipur land, identity, and cultural legacy. He paid homage to those who lost their lives during historical events such as the Anglo-Manipur War and the Seven Years Devastation, emphasizing their vital role in protecting the homeland.
