The restoration of unrestricted vehicular movement along National Highway-2 has initiated a gradual economic recovery across Manipur following severe disruptions that began during the crisis in May 2023. Addressing the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan gathering at Tadubi local ground in Senapati district, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh highlighted how reopening this critical route has helped revive commercial activity after prolonged hardship.
Revenue Loss and Disruption to Daily Livelihoods
Singh pointed out that persistent strikes, bandhs, and highway blockades had crippled financial operations throughout the state. The disruption severely affected vulnerable daily-wage workers and disrupted education for students. He estimated that the crisis caused Manipur an overall loss of approximately Rs 1,200 crore in GST revenue between the years 2023 and 2026. Acknowledging local contributions toward stability, the Chief Minister extended gratitude to the residents of Maram, Tadubi, and Mao for their active cooperation in reopening the highway.
Vital Supply Lifeline Connecting Imphal and Guwahati
National Highway-2 serves as an indispensable logistics and transport corridor, linking Imphal with Guwahati via Dimapur. Regular public transport operations along this stretch officially recommenced on August 21, establishing predictable supply chains and reducing transit bottlenecks. Singh also mentioned that his personal decision to attend the gathering in Tadubi followed the demise of former MLA N Kayisii in 2025.
Appeal for Unity and Collective Identity
Emphasizing peaceful reconciliation, Singh urged all communities to resolve lingering disputes through direct dialogue. He expressed deep concern over the visible hesitation among Meiteis, Nagas, and Kukis to embrace their common identity as Manipuris. Stressing that unity is paramount, he called on residents to see themselves first as Indians and subsequently as Manipuris, working together to safeguard regional harmony.
Capital Allocation for Village Roads and Senapati Healthcare
Turning toward regional development, the Chief Minister announced targeted capital allocations across legislative seats. Approximately Rs 10 crore has been marked in the state budget for every Assembly constituency specifically to build inter-village connecting roads. Furthermore, a new medical college will be set up in Senapati district to elevate healthcare access across the hill areas, mirroring the balanced growth strategy that previously saw a medical college established in Churachandpur district under the earlier administration.
Seva Sankalp Abhiyan and National Growth Context
The Seva Sankalp Abhiyan is currently taking place across the country to commemorate Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 25 years in public service, focusing on good governance and civic welfare. Referring to the broader national trajectory, Singh noted that India has advanced from being the 11th-largest global economy before Modi assumed office to securing the position of the world's fourth-largest economy.
