A severe case of suspected food poisoning unfolded in Manipur on Thursday when at least 75 Border Security Force personnel and three local civilians suddenly fell ill after having breakfast. The incident prompted swift emergency medical evacuation as those affected began exhibiting distress, complaining primarily of acute nausea and persistent vomiting.
Breakfast at Battalion Camp Leads to Sudden Complications
The individuals who took ill were based at the D/58 battalion camp located in Imphal West district, an area functioning under the jurisdiction of the Lamsang Police Station. Problems arose shortly after the morning meal, following which the health of several personnel and three civilians on premises deteriorated rapidly. Seeking urgent medical care, authorities transported all affected individuals to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal at around 1 pm.
Prompt Care at RIMS Emergency Ward Brings Stability
Upon arrival at RIMS, medical teams immediately admitted all 78 individuals into the hospital emergency department to administer urgent stabilizing care. Confirming the response, an official from RIMS stated that the Border Security Force personnel and three civilians received immediate attention in the emergency ward and noted that their health status had stabilized following medical intervention. The official noted that the illness was caused by suspected food contamination.
Lab Analysis Underway to Pinpoint Cause of Illness
Addressing the medical situation, RIMS Medical Superintendent-in-Charge Prof M Rameshwar stated that specialized diagnostic tests are currently being conducted to establish what triggered the outbreak. At present, the exact source and contaminant behind the health scare remain unconfirmed. Specific information regarding the precise food items served during breakfast, whether all patients consumed an identical meal, and details on food sample testing have not been made available yet. Further background surrounding the development and subsequent official inquiries remain awaited.
