A Naga village in Manipur's Kangpokpi district came under attack late Tuesday night when an armed group fired multiple rounds and then set fire to several homes, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Gunfire Then Flames Near Midnight
The assault unfolded around 10 pm at Tokpa Liangmai Naga village, situated close to Tumnoupokpi Thangal village. Witnesses and officials said the attackers first fired several rounds before turning to arson, torching a number of houses in the settlement.
Toll Still Being Confirmed, Nine Houses Said Gutted
A precise count of destroyed homes has yet to be finalised, officials said, partly because most structures in the village are kutcha houses that burn down quickly and leave little to survey. Even so, reliable sources put the number of completely gutted houses at nine. Investigators have not yet established a motive, and the identities of those behind the attack remain unknown.
Frightened Residents Seek Protection
The attack has left villagers shaken, and residents have appealed to the authorities to open an immediate investigation and put in place measures to guarantee their safety going forward.
Silence From Administration And Police
As of Wednesday morning, neither the Kangpokpi district administration, the Manipur Police nor security forces had issued any official statement on the incident.
Another Flashpoint Amid Ongoing Unrest
The latest violence comes against a backdrop of persistent tension across several parts of Manipur, where repeated attacks by armed groups on villages have kept security concerns high. Just two days earlier, on Monday, at least three residential houses were set ablaze in Kailenjang Kuki village, also in Kangpokpi district. Police said that incident occurred around 1:30 pm at Kailenjang village, located roughly 5 km west of the Senapati police station.
