Women outnumber men in Manipur's newly finalised voter list after SIR overhaul

The Election Commission has released Manipur's final voter list after completing its Special Intensive Revision, with 19.60 lakh voters on the rolls and women now outnumbering men by around 53,000.

Women now outnumber men on Manipur's electoral rolls after the Election Commission completed its Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, and released the state's final voter list on Sunday. The list carries a total of 19.60 lakh voters.

How many names were added and removed

According to the state's Chief Electoral Officer, Arun Kumar Sinha, 1.89 lakh names were struck off the rolls during the revision, while 56,871 new voters were added. The exercise involved both a large-scale clean-up of old or duplicate entries and the inclusion of fresh voters.

What CEO Arun Kumar Sinha said

Sinha said, "After the SIR process, the state's 60 assembly constituencies now have more than 19.60 lakh voters." He added that of the total, 9,53,350 are men and 10.06 lakh are women, meaning women voters outnumber men by roughly 53,000.

The revision began on May 18

Sinha said the revision process began on May 18 this year, when the electoral rolls carried 20.93 lakh voters. The final list released after the exercise shows a 6.33 percent drop from that starting figure.

Why women could hold the key

With Manipur's 60 assembly seats now showing more women voters than men, this shift could influence how contests play out, since women voters' turnout and choices may prove decisive in close races. Similar Special Intensive Revision exercises are currently underway in several other states as authorities work to clean up voter lists nationwide.
